During our walk this afternoon, I wanted to practice some high speed sync flash photography, and my dog, Thorvald, acted as the model. I was amazed of how much some fill flash can do to a daytime photography. Feel free to comment. I will post a few more later, but there seemed to be a problem with my Pbase account at the moment.

Very very nice. But, it's a Dane, what would you expect but nice!! One thing that's pretty distracting is that metal building on the right. Too bad you couldn't have set him up with just the bushes behind him and the blue sky. I'll have to try some fill flash with mine outdoors -- once it stops raining!!

Danes rule!!

What a handsome boy (of course, like Julie said, he's a Dane!). Fill flash works great here!

think i'd have used more tele to blur the BG more but apart from the distracting conveyer belt (?) under his chin its a great pose and beautifully lit.

All of these are beautiful dogs and love the pose on the second posted shot. The first shot is wonderful-but as mentioned that building in the background and the conveyor belt are very distracting.

Thank you all for your comments and pictures! You all have great looking dogs. I wish earcropping was legal here in Norway. makes a noble dog look even better if you ask me.

Man, I grew up with Danes. Absolutely the best dogs on the planet.

Great shots, everyone!

Working a small child into the composition is always good for making a dog of this size look more grand...

Sorry - don't do kids. These are my kids:D . Danes are a "head" breed and most of my work with Danes are head shot portraits. Actually, most all of my dog work is head portraits. Owners want to "see" their beautiful dogs, and the view they have in mind is their expressive faces.

This is a mother/daughter shot. Mother Cleo on the left (almost 7 years old), daughter Lily on the right (14 months old).

Beautiful, just beautiful! What exactly do you do in PS with those? Especially the last one? Do you take the dog picture, and put it over a new layer, and then do some gradient work or what? It looks really cool!

Thanks for the compliment. I do a number of different things. The last Fawn was taken in beautiful early fall light (September) in a parking lot at a dog show. Very little was done to the Dane itself other than taking him out of the original photo (the natural light really brought out the texture of his coat). I do a lot of edge work with a very soft eraser brush so the dog doesn't look like it's just slapped on another background. Then I add the background layer, which in this case was a simple gradient fill with the foreground and background colors being black and a brown that I picked out that nicely accented the Fawn coat. Signature is than another separate layer. I don't have a studio, but I think dogs are more comfortable in familiar territory. In this case the dog is a show dog.

This is another Dane (a cousin to mine), taken at the same show. You can see how nice the light was that day. This is an "out of the shadows" black & white that I like to do with dark colored dogs.

Very nice...we use to have a Dane until he was stolen. Was so good with the kids. Brought back memories when I saw the first picture, looked so much like Latimer. Thanks for the photograph!!
