Thank you everyone for such a strong field of entries. There are some very good shots here and it is hard to choose an outright winner. I also had to make a hard call on the use of a border which I didn't like doing as the shot was excellent and fitted the theme so nicely. However.... in the end I went for three images had an immediate impact on me – these ones really jumped out of the screen and said “I am a square photo in a square frame” and those are ………

First: 3-dart – zucchini ……. (this has beautiful subtlety)
Second: Boutty (squares within squares within squares within squares)
Third: BottomBracket - Square Egg Slices (What an unusual idea – well done)

More detailed comments on each of the photos:

Ma-s - squares in squares – This is very well found and of course fits a square frame – but I find the top edge of the building distracts me.

Rpolitsr – archer – I like the look of intense concentration in the archer’s eye. It leads your eye out of the photo only to bring you back in again. Nice.

BottomBracket - Square Egg Slices – This is a fun shot. Very square – in fact you must let us know what sort of chicken lays a square egg. The colours and simple composition are striking.

Andrewaaa5 - 22 [The unknown soldiers are coming...] – I like the use of the faux film frame as it fits the theme so nicely but it pushed the limit on the “no borders” rule. That aside, it is a haunting photo, perfectly put together and presented. The exposure is spot on and it looks as if it was conceived as a square-format shot before being taken.

Margie - Clock tower @ Filoli's – I really like the colour in this shot, the blues, creams and browns work very well together. It also fits a square format nicely.

Marie - drinks on the square – Don’t look now but I think you’re being watched! The sign adds nicely to the theme but I find the composition a little unbalanced.

Beardking - Getting his iron – this is a quirky shot and nicely composed. The backlighting makes it hard to see more detail in Mr Giraffe’s face though. Remember to put your title in the title though.

Autumn – lemon pavlova – That has to be the perfect pav. I wan’t the recipe, in fact I’d like one delivered. I also think it is well shot and the patterns and textures of the pav and the filling are yummy. Maybe I would have cropped out the black base – or used a white plate too.

Maureen Souza – Busy Bee – A nice nature shot but the bees a bit too central in the composition for my liking – and some hi-lights are blown out too.

Teekay – butterfly blue – Gorgeous colour in the butterfly and very sharp. I also like the composition which is central without being too much so.

Boutty – waiting – Lovely composition – I like the way the square theme is repeated in the shapes of the doorway, the brickwork and the garden beds.

3dart – zucchini ……. – I was really taken by the lovely shape and form of the flower and the way it fits nicely within the square format. I like the way the flower stands out from the lovely dark and out-of-focus background. The shot oozes square format …. and now I can spell zucchini too!

Ph.viny - Wiseman says just walk this way – You’ve used the format to frame the Wiseman well, and I like the simplicity and un-cluttered composition. The limited range of colour too adds to its appeal.

KC Jewel – Beach Ball – Really nice idea that fits the competition theme well. The colours are great but I would like to see this taken with a polarising filter to cut the glare and intensify the colour a bit.

Thanks again for contributing to a fun and exciting challenge. Remember, these are just my opinions and the thing that really counts is how these photos speak to you personally.

I'm off to sleep,

Andrew

Challenge #116 - Think inside the squareThe physical edges of a photograph and the way that your composition interacts with and relates to those edges can be important to its success.

We normally shoot and present our photos in 4:3 or 3:2 format but for this challenge I'd like to see photographs that take advantage of a square (1:1) format (ie. 640x640 pixels when submitted to the challenge). So imagine your G-series camera is an older Rollieflex TLR, Hasselblad or polaroid camera that takes square format film and show me how you would "think inside the square".

PS. I'm assuming everyone has access to a program that can crop to square format - eg. Photoshop. If not Irfanview and xnview are just two (amongst many) freeware image editors that you can download to do the job - also zoombrowser has a trimming function - and we all must have that.

Best of luck, Andrew

Well done all, Great shot 3-Dart, it certainly fitted the format and nicely framed and lit.
Boutty's waiting was the one for me though, I thought it captured the very esscence of the theme, great shot mate.
BB's Square eggs on a square plate, fun and clever photo, nioce one!

Lots of great photo's there, well done to all!!

It was a nice shot that took the top spot, and I thought that it was a winner as soon as I seen it :) pretty, pastel, fractals sprang to mind..

I read some article on how to compose for square format, just after the challenge was posted, and to be honest i think the theory in this example is quite extreme:

http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/publication02.htm

I normally try to stick to 3rds when i am shooting in a square, but i think "anything goes" as long as it looks good and all this talk on rules in composition can get far too over the top. I have actually been shooting film on a Rollieflex for the past few months, and it can only shoot in sqaures, and that is where my "faux border" came from, an old Rollie negative that I scanned; and abat, you were right for disqualifying me, I only added it for fun to get in the real spirit of shooting in square format.

Just to explain my title, not that I am being prompted, but more just 'cos I want to; "The Unknkown Soldiers are coming", it is quite a hot topic currently in Estonian/Russian relationships. A monument of an unknown soldier is being relocated to a military graveyard in Tallinn, as well as the remains of approximately 12 Russian soldiers are to be relocated. They are be relocated to the adjoining graveyard to where my photo was taken. There is some more news coverage here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6608053.stm

There are very many mixed debates on this, and there were 2 days riots in the Estonian capital, Tallinn.

The other part of the title (22) was the age at which the fellow on the grave stone passed away.

Congratulations to 3-dart's great composition & awesome soft focus image of the zucchini and BottomBracket's square egg slices - the plate, the colours and composition were great. I am keen to hear from you how did you achieve that especially the square egg slices of Pio's. ;)

Well done all for your inspiring images. Thanks abat for the great challenge and staying up late commenting on everyone's photos. And cheers for the placing.

Thanks Kapeji for your kind comment. My 'waiting' photo was taken during the long wait for a fighter jet supposibly to fly over the new and old parliament houses and the war memorial where I stood in Canberra. It didn't happen.

Good to read everyone's interesting comments post challenge, especially to andrewaaa5 for the background on his shot which becomes even more haunting with the additional information. I agonisied a fair bit over the border issue - I wanted to allow it as an integral part of the photographic statement but in the end I thought it only fair to err on the side of the rules. Nice shot though - very nice.

Boutty's shot was also very evocative - it is taken from the steps of the War Memorial in Canberra - and it just happened to be ANZAC day this week in Australia - a day when we reflect on the price paid by Australian and New Zealand casualties of war. Funny how that theme crossed though several entries in the challenge.

3-Dart's shot showed nicely that a square format picture doesn't have to be about squares. I found it quite beautiful.

I hope we are all now keen to explore the square format more. I know I am, and I have my thoughts on an old Yashica 6x6cm TLR that I have in storage in Canberra. I must pick it up soon - if anything just to experience the feel and workmanship of that style of camera, but also to take some square shots.

I'm off travelling for work at present and will not be too near a computer so I may not chime in too much more in this challenge.

BTW, has anyone heard from 3-Dart?

Hey thanks to Andrew for the well run challenge and the interesting theme. Lots of nice pictures this week. Congratulations to both 3Dart and Boutty for being in the winner's circle, um er square. It is always interesting to read the comments and story behind the pics taken and I am glad that some of you shared them.

When I saw the theme I immediately thought of square things so I got out my square plates and set off to make a square egg. How do you make one? Why, with a square egg maker, of course! I love to cook and I love kitchen gadgetry, that's why I have one. They are fun to make and eat, kids really like them. For this shoot, unfortunately I only had one egg left in the fridge, so when the yolk cracked when I sliced the egg I had no choice but to use it.:(

BottomBracket - thankyou for showing your square egg maker. What a neat gadget.

Boutty - I love your Wall off remembrance shot. Those poppies are haunting and the bokeh excellent.

My own contribution to the square genre is attached. I have always admired B&W portraiture taken on square format cameras. My subject is David Oliver - a highly respected Australian portrait photographer who I was interviewing for my local camera club. This is the first time I had ever been exposed to proper studio lighting. Also, hope you don't mind but it is taken on my 30D.
