Thank you everyone for such a strong field of entries. There are some very good shots here and it is hard to choose an outright winner. I also had to make a hard call on the use of a border which I didn't like doing as the shot was excellent and fitted the theme so nicely. However.... in the end I went for three images had an immediate impact on me – these ones really jumped out of the screen and said “I am a square photo in a square frame” and those are ………
First: 3-dart – zucchini ……. (this has beautiful subtlety)
Second: Boutty (squares within squares within squares within squares)
Third: BottomBracket - Square Egg Slices (What an unusual idea – well done)
More detailed comments on each of the photos:
Ma-s - squares in squares – This is very well found and of course fits a square frame – but I find the top edge of the building distracts me.
Rpolitsr – archer – I like the look of intense concentration in the archer’s eye. It leads your eye out of the photo only to bring you back in again. Nice.
BottomBracket - Square Egg Slices – This is a fun shot. Very square – in fact you must let us know what sort of chicken lays a square egg. The colours and simple composition are striking.
Andrewaaa5 - 22 [The unknown soldiers are coming...] – I like the use of the faux film frame as it fits the theme so nicely but it pushed the limit on the “no borders” rule. That aside, it is a haunting photo, perfectly put together and presented. The exposure is spot on and it looks as if it was conceived as a square-format shot before being taken.
Margie - Clock tower @ Filoli's – I really like the colour in this shot, the blues, creams and browns work very well together. It also fits a square format nicely.
Marie - drinks on the square – Don’t look now but I think you’re being watched! The sign adds nicely to the theme but I find the composition a little unbalanced.
Beardking - Getting his iron – this is a quirky shot and nicely composed. The backlighting makes it hard to see more detail in Mr Giraffe’s face though. Remember to put your title in the title though.
Autumn – lemon pavlova – That has to be the perfect pav. I wan’t the recipe, in fact I’d like one delivered. I also think it is well shot and the patterns and textures of the pav and the filling are yummy. Maybe I would have cropped out the black base – or used a white plate too.
Maureen Souza – Busy Bee – A nice nature shot but the bees a bit too central in the composition for my liking – and some hi-lights are blown out too.
Teekay – butterfly blue – Gorgeous colour in the butterfly and very sharp. I also like the composition which is central without being too much so.
Boutty – waiting – Lovely composition – I like the way the square theme is repeated in the shapes of the doorway, the brickwork and the garden beds.
3dart – zucchini ……. – I was really taken by the lovely shape and form of the flower and the way it fits nicely within the square format. I like the way the flower stands out from the lovely dark and out-of-focus background. The shot oozes square format …. and now I can spell zucchini too!
Ph.viny - Wiseman says just walk this way – You’ve used the format to frame the Wiseman well, and I like the simplicity and un-cluttered composition. The limited range of colour too adds to its appeal.
KC Jewel – Beach Ball – Really nice idea that fits the competition theme well. The colours are great but I would like to see this taken with a polarising filter to cut the glare and intensify the colour a bit.
Thanks again for contributing to a fun and exciting challenge. Remember, these are just my opinions and the thing that really counts is how these photos speak to you personally.
I'm off to sleep,
Andrew
Challenge #116 - Think inside the squareThe physical edges of a photograph and the way that your composition interacts with and relates to those edges can be important to its success.
We normally shoot and present our photos in 4:3 or 3:2 format but for this challenge I'd like to see photographs that take advantage of a square (1:1) format (ie. 640x640 pixels when submitted to the challenge). So imagine your G-series camera is an older Rollieflex TLR, Hasselblad or polaroid camera that takes square format film and show me how you would "think inside the square".
PS. I'm assuming everyone has access to a program that can crop to square format - eg. Photoshop. If not Irfanview and xnview are just two (amongst many) freeware image editors that you can download to do the job - also zoombrowser has a trimming function - and we all must have that.
Best of luck, Andrew
