i got to the beach as soon as i could after work today and the sun was out of position. however, i thought the back-lighting through the wave was interesting. your thoughts please?

This isn't good it's great! I like the light through the back of the wave. That is pure power. It's got to be nice to have access to these kind of waves. Show some more pictures please.

Absolutely fantastic shot... might just hit it a little with shadow/highlight to lighting up the skin tones... otherwise its awesome.

Great shot an IMHO the light works, he must of been flying down the face.

Incredible shot! The only thing missing, is the shadow of a hughe shark inside the wave, just to add some excitement:-)

ooops! my bad trevi...such being the case, shoot me a pm here when you do get to cruise by and i'll let you know where i'll tentatively be shooting surf shots. (tentative because of weather/wave conditions), and we can trade surf pic shooting secrets. :D

if you can make it out here between november to april for the winter swell on the north shore or during the summer months for some south shore surfing action, it would well worth your while.;)

dp86 and ericm, the setup for the shot (i'm pretty sure) was 1d2n hanging off of a 600L IS in TV @ 1250 f/11. i was also using a 10D/100-400L IS/monopod combo when the surfing action got too close for the 600L. bodyboard rockstar pro? that contest always seems to elude me for some reason or another. i heard the surf was mack'in for that meet though.

mdm, like i mentioned earlier, the sun was in the wrong position to get the kind of shots i usually prefer. the shot i posted stood out in that i was moving down the beach trying to keep the sun at a respectable angle when the right combination of all factors allowed for the shot. the window of opportunity to get more shots like the one posted was really narrow as i had to deal with cloud cover, gusting winds, the sun moving faster than i could hi-knee through the deep, soft sand to keep a good angle on lighting and the timing of the incoming wave sets. i think i got a few more like it, but i let a bunch of beach bunnies mess around with my setup foe awhile and lost some really sick shots that way. (was well worth it though!);)

i'll try and dig them up and post as soon as i'm able.

convergent, thanks for the advise. when i print it up for the guy in the pic i will heed your advice.;)

squashed, thanks for the kind words, and hurry back!

carsanballs, yeah, the waves were really pushing the surfers long that day, especially during the drop-in's. not exactly ground shakers, but a strong swell nontheless. at close range it was hard to keep the surfers sighted in.

widowmaker, yeah that'd be the finishing touch, wouldn't it? well, here's a shot i snapped and photochopped as a prank awhile back. does this in some way fulfill your wishes?;)

Hey Phocalphobe! Excellent, excactly what I was talking about! Can't tell it has been photoshoped either, due to the expression on the surfers face! Great!

i used to live in hawaii, and was lucky enough to bodyboard at pipe a few times on some decent waves (i was scared ****less) that was before i started surfing, and although i did surf several other spots on the "seven mile miracle" i never surfed pipe. great shot.

joshbehan, yup, that vertical drop-in at the pipe is like no other. the biggest surf i rode there was like 6-8' (hawaiian) and my very first takeoff that morning featured me and my board taking a sphincter-cramping panic ride over the falls. i bet you know how that feels huh?;) i had to really question my motives for being out there while i was paddling back out.

ericm, yessir, that 600IS rocks! after owning it and messing with it for all this time, i think i'm finally getting some idea of what it's true capabilities are, and how to take advantage of them.

jej826, thanks!

wow palladium, i'm really impressed with how you brought out the surfer in the pic. before viewing your workup on the shot, i never thought that it was possible to manipulate the shot that way. would you mind sharing how you did that?

joshbehan
25th of April 2007 (Wed), 21:27
6-8 hawaiian is no joke, i almost ran over kelly slater on a smaller day out there, he was bodysurfing, and i was bodyboarding. i miss hawaii, i loved living there, and it's actually not out of the realm of possibilities that my girlfriend and i could move back.

Well it's really easy especially working on such small images.

I duped the original image and chanded the visibility mode from normal to screen. Here I not really worring about the overall changes to the image, I really just concentrating on the surfer. The surfer is brightened up abit but I wanted more so I did it again buy duping this new layer. Now the surfer was a little "too hot/bright" IMHO - so I reduced the opacity of this 3rd layer to about 50%. I now had the surfer to look OK but the rest of the image was washed out.

Now to bring back the rest of the image - I flattened my top 2 layers and added a layer mask to this top layer. Then I just painted back in the original image using black (pure black). I adjusted the waves abit at their intersections but this should give you a good starting point.

I basicially did the same with the other image just adjusting the amount of water color but redugine the opacity of the image layer mask.

;)

ghostrider, thanks for the compliment.:)

btw, is that your ride in your sig? looks like it's got a lot of muscle packed into a nice sleek body style.

joshbehan, i just wanted to share this shot to help you reminisce of fonder days..;) it's a lesser quality shot with a blown out background but i thought you might get a "kick" out of it. it got taken during the same session as the shot i first posted in this thread.

your thoughts please?

My thoughts?

It's well overhead and meaty...and that dude is about 2 seconds away from the ride of his life!

I used to live in Hawaii as well. Surfed almost daily. I surfed the north shore once during a decent swell. It was 5-7 w/ sets to 10'. It was absolutely insane. Nothing that hollow, but big and strong nonetheless.

Great picture......and the lighting is great.

MikeI, happy to hear you got intimately acquainted with some of those north shore pile-drivers. it sure changes you in some ways don't it?;) and thanks for the kind words.

well aloha again rippanics! i've been checking out your website and must say you do have alot of killer surf shots posted. and nice shot of that stand up paddle surfer. looks like he's going to get an involuntary nasal enema of the third degree.;) is that the guy blaine who makes those types of boards? if it is, he's crazier than i thought, mostly because i don't see a leash in the pic. nice of you to share the moment.

dirt lover, glad you like it.:)

I was playing around with the oil painting to see if it would work on waves. The colors in the wave are fantastic. Hope you don't mind me changing your picture around a bit.
