I've got a Hoya S-HMC skylight on my 17-40L & as I'm a bit of a perfectionist I like to have things as perfect as can be! I've noticed that there's a very small mark on an area of the filter that doesn't seem to disappear when cleaned with my lens cloth - will this or any other kind of mark whether it be dust or whatever effect the final outcome?

Thanks.

try the lenspen for cleaning. it's cheap and much-much better than any cloth. but I think you answered your own question when you described yourself ;) may be it's the time to replace that filter. just remember the bright side: without the filter that scratch could be on your lens.

What happened when you tried a drop of lens cleaner solution?

My guess is that the mark will have no effect on your final shot, even if the mark were on your lens. Dust on the internal sensor is more likely to affect your image (but don't mess with the sensor it if you don't have to.) There are wonderful threads here on sensor cleaning when your time comes.
