Taking Basic Photography Workshop for four Sundays. One of our assignments is to take still life pictures.

well...don't submit that one.

don't get me wrong, it's very well shot. technically good. however, if i were your teacher (which i have no business being!) i would ask what the story of this image is. is it about the m&ms, or is it about the rose? if there is indeed a connection, you've got to figure out a way to compose them so that connection is easily recognizable to the viewer.

or...maybe i just don't get it! ;)

I would try a photo of just the rose (or just the candy, for that matter), personally, shot the way the first photo is. You're getting a nice reflection, and it appears technically good overall, but I'm also just kinda confused by the M&Ms in the glass combined w/ the rose.

Then again, I'm just a total amateur, so what I think doesn't really mean that much. It's just what I immediately thought when I looked at the photos.

I may get flamed, but I get tired of rose shots way before I get tired of candy shots... and the M&Ms are different.... try just shooting them, without the rose.

Thanks for all your feedback.

zacker hit it right on the button. I was thinking of using Hershey's Kisses but I don't find them colorful. Thus, decided with the one that "melts on your mouth but not on your hands"... :D
