Hello,
Having a hard time figuring out if the Sigma, Tamron, etc., also incorporate image stabilization in some of their lenses. If they do, what are the terms used in the product name, such as 'IS' for Canons?
I'm just checking out various lenses for my Rebel XTi.
Thanks!
Chandler.

Sigma is OS, I believe.

Sigma uses OS for Optical Stabilization on their 80-400OS and upcoming 18-200OS.
Tamron just released a 28-300 VC for Vibration Control.

Thanks gents!
Did I read correct, that the Sigma is not designed for Canons?
I found lots of press releases for the Tamron lens, but nothing about sales and price. I only seached the lense name on Yahoo, so maybe I missed it.
What I'm gathering, is that for the time being, IS is still basically the domain of Canon, for Canon bodies.

You read hogwash. There are lots of Sigmas in Canon mount.

Sorry, I wan't specific enough. I meant the one (or 2) lenses with 'OS' from Sigma.

They have Canon mounts as well.

I have the Sigma 80-400 OS for the Canon mount. The OS is very functional and typically exceeds the 2 f stops specification, perhaps due to my excercise with hand held telephoto for years without stabilization.
The 80-400 is practically the only non Canon lens that offers OS in the market today and Sigma's only sample of this technology.
I have mixed feellings with this lens. It is certainly very well built, the IQ is not bad, but the slightly more expensive Canon 100-400 is much better.
The 80-400 exhibits a very strange behaviour that I have read in the photozone review of the lens (and thought was due to a bad sample). The lens generates a stutter in 3 fps shooting, when the shutter speed is between 1/125 and 1/250 sec. In higher shutter speeds all is fine and in shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/125 all is fine again. Strange.
Now, since the original question is about non Canon IS lenses, I must say that yes, Sigma's OS is good and functional, but a little noisy. I can only compare it to the EF-S 17-85IS which is a much smaller lens with small elements, so perhaps, the comparison in unfair.
The Sigma OS also delivers two modes, 1 and 2, for full compensation vs. vertical only, used during panning. I find the panning mode to work very well - again have not had any experience with Canon 2 mode IS lenses - and also very useful.
