View Full Version : Shutter Mechanism life span?

Does the Shutter mechanism on a DSLR have a limited life? I happily shoot anything that moves (or stands still for that matter) I probably take two or three times as many photos than I need to. Heck, I just love the sound of that cher-chung noise! But, am I reducing the working life of my 10D by 2/3?

Has anyone ever worn out a shutter mechanism? I don't mean did it break, did it wear out?

Yes the cameras do have a set number of shutter releases. If I'm not mistaken (and someone please correct on this if I am) the shutter life of the 10D is somewhere near 20,000 or 25,000 releases. I think CDS had his go at around 18,000 and I think there was someone else whose 10D shutter went at around the same number of releases or close to it.

If you like listening to the shutters clicking away, you might want to consider getting the 1DmkII. It's rated for 200,000 releases!

Martin,

Yes, shutter mechanisms do wear out. I've never seen an offical number for the 10D, but my educated guess is 50K actuations. The 1D/1Ds are rated for 150K and the 1DMkII goes up to 200K.

The shutter mechanism can be replaced. I think I've seen numbers of around 300 bucks US - no doubt, we'd get charged more in good ol' rip off Britain.

I know a user with a 10D that has passed the 110,000 mark and still no problems and another who had a 10D shutter go a 9,000. They are rated at 50,000 (unofficially) but I suppose like anything mechanical they can break or wear sooner (or later) than expected.

I think that the number that usually reported is the number of shutter releases that a camera was tested up to. I remember reading in the pop photo that Nikon D100 (or may be it was a more advanced professional model?) was tested up to 350,000 shutter releases.

Mine went at about 24,000 luckily I was still under warranty.

most shutters from 10D wear out around 30.000 releases
Don't be afraid to use it alot i've seen 10D's with over 75.000 releases before they broke
it's a prediction that they go around 30,000 not a fact! it's mechanical so it can break sooner but also much much much later

I got to 56,000 before the shutter went paws up, 1/2009.

That, on a 10D that suffered two drops,

#one in 2004, a fully-extended (5'6") tripod knockover,
#two in 2005, waist-high (~3') drop from neckstrap undone.

Both Canon and a reputable local repair shop quoted about $200-$230
for repair.

The thread I'm posting to popped as #1 on google search,
"canon camera shutter life",

so I thought I'd post here and hope others do also,
so to build a real-world data pile.

You'd have to run that one by TDP, I'm not sure what his sources are, though his info seems pretty spot-on.

They probably are as the list is pretty complete and others I am pretty positive of are spot on!

Thanks for the post.. Where was this 4 years ago when I was looking for it? LOL

Dont read too mutch it to those numbers, they can go anytime, my 1dmk2 went at 37,000 and not 200,000

Very true. Those numbers are design specifications--they aren't even MTBF predictions.

Yeah, i understand... i guess its really a toss coin. It could go either way, lucky if it goes beyond and not too lucky if it goes under. I have 1000 clicks so far and I guess i'll make the most of it til it goes bad :D

I have heard from some people in the know that wet cleaning can have an effect on the shutter mechanisms as well due to dry lubricants used on the newer shaker units. So be careful not to over do it and stay away from too much cleaning solution.

Older units that dont move should not be effected.

Even if they were as with anything it can fail at any time for any reason.

I have a photo trip coming soon and my XTi has about 40,000 clicks on it. I never thought about the shutter life span before but now that you guys mentioned it I'm getting a little worried.

Hmm.. Should I be thinking about getting a second body?

Wow, 2004 huh...

My 40D had/has 21k clicks on it. And today the shutter died.

So yeah, it's unpredictable.

Sorry to hear about that Tumeg. Thats way below the rated 100,000.

I guess I'll have to look for another body, just for the peace of mind.

My 40D shutter went at 12,000 shots/9 months old; the lady at Canon told me they're nominally rated at 100,000 but she's seen many that have gone well in excess of that.

Hmm.. I have about 7,000 clicks on my XS, should I watch what I click? Anybody know the rating for a Rebel XS? Beacuse on a good weekend of shooting, I shoot over 1000 pictures.. Maybe I am shutter happy :p. (I gave this thread another bump).

I'm just wondering, what do you do when your shutter fails on you? Send it in to Canon? I find it hard to believe just @ 21K clicks..

I have a 10D that got 70000 + clicks on and still going strong
A 1D Mk1 with 89000 + clicks without a problem
and a 1D Mk 2 with 150000 clicks and still happy and sounds good.

Numbers is number, they will all go eventually but are easy to replace.
(Hope I'm not tempting fate here) lol...:)

The life-span of most shutters is less than the life-span of most threads on this forum - Except this one :-)

Don't worry about it - just take pictures, it could fail at 1 shot or 100,000 shots.

Is there a counter that lets you know how many shots were taken with a body?

Like if I were to buy a used one and the seller claims only 5k shots, how would I know for sure?
