Is it worth the extra $150 for the Canon? Has anybody have had any experiances with the Sigma?

I've heard good things about the sigma Flash but I prefer the Canon overall so I'm sure I'll never have to worry about communication issues between flash & camera including any future bodies I may purchase. Also if you ever want to set up studio lighting with the canons you can.

I have no experience of the sigma but recently upgraded to a 550ex froma 380ex on my 300d. I have to say the results are excellent much better lighting definitely worth every penny of it . I know this doesnt tell about the sigma but just wanted to tell u the canon is worth it.

Happy shooting

I have the Sigma. I have only had it for less then 2 weeks but so far I am very impressed. I know it is not the same build as the 550 but it does compare very favorably in terms of features.

Thanks all for the Replies.. I believe I'm going to go ahead and stick with the Canon.

I'm also trying to think what lense I should get next for Studio work. I believe the 24 - 70 Canon f2.8L and / or 85 L is on the list, but I would like to see some comparisons to the Tokina 24 - 75mm and the Sigma 28 - 70 f2.8 as well.

I opted to go with the Canon myself, just to ensure compatibility, and to retain resale value in the future (when the 650 or 750 or whatever new model comes out some year). Ordered it Monday morning.

Now if B&H would just get it out of "order processing" status and ship the darned thing to me! :)

Hahaha, I feel that pain. There is nothing more taunting than the.. Hey you gave us your money, we can't just teleport it to you. :) Though if somebody could come up with teleportation.. that would be nice to get my new toys much quicker.. :)

Well I'd feel better if it were in UPS's hands, but it appears B&H just hasn't shipped it yet (though it's in stock). Might have to call them today and ask what the hold up is. Previous times I've ordered from them, items have gone out the same day...

i've got the Sigma for my D300. This flash works very well with the D300 even it has exactly the same exposure problems !! (this is the E-TTL of course).
The ig issue is that the building quality is not that good. In fact mine is broken. One day I put the camera in the bag with the flash on it. One of my childrens press the bag (I suppose) and when I open the bag again the flash shoe was broken !!
I know I shouldn't have done so, but...
Now I'm not sure what to buy, because I'm not hapy with the E-TTL at all. I've been more than 10 years with a Nikon 801 and a SB24 and never had a subexposed flash with them !!

What is a D300?

There is no Canon camera with that model number.

Yes, you are right, I mean 300D

E-TTL is more of a camera function than a flash unit function. So, with your one 300D camera, whether you use a Canon flash or a Sigma flash may be a moot point.

I kind of like my 550EX flash, because in a dark room you can see it emitting its dark red focus pattern that helps the autofocus system of the lens and the camera work.

The first time I shot a recent wedding, I had the 550EX on a flash bracket, and after working the whole job, my arms were tired. It is a lot of weight swinging around.

jalafer,

If you are not happy with the ETTL you can change the mode on the 500D (Super) and adjust the flash your self. You can also use FEC on the flash to increase/decrease the flash.

Also, You want the flash mount on the flash to break. A lot better then the flash shoe on the camera.
