View Full Version : Why can't they open my files?

I just sent two CDs to a company that I took headshots of the leadership team for. I just got an email back from them and they said this:

"I received the disks you sent, but we are unable to open them. I took them to Dave, our IT guy, and he said you should burn them in either ISO or Windows Joliet format."

First of all: what is this person saying: "windows joliet format or ISO format?"

Secondly: they are all using Macs at their business

Thirdly: When burning the discs using windows vista, it took an absurd amount of time to copy 220 Mb to the CD (like an hour and forty minutes!)

Based on the information above, I could have possibly screwed up with the file format when burning the cd, however I did test the cds to make sure they worked on my PC before I shipped them off.

Any ideas? Any help would be most appreciated!

Chris

They could work on yours but not on theirs. Maybe you made them a multi-session disc that is left open and not closed properly. Probably better to e-mail if they have Macs.

You will need to burn in "mastered" format.
See http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/b47eb51a-ea6d-4d97-97b0-2d07a59316981033.mspx

When you buy your next DVD burner, get one with Nero 6.6 bundled. It's fast and easy.

YES! Pekka and borderfox I think you may be right on the money! I could not understand why the new burning method that is the default of windows vista. It does give me an option to burn in the mastered format, but i have not tried it yet.

Drives often throw up errors, particularly when talking about compatible DVD's. FWIW, they'll always play on the drive that burnt them so it doesn't really help you notice if they're good or not.

Nero is the way to go, and this is yet another reason to stay away, and I mean far away from VISTA. In the long run I think this is going to be the end of Microsoft.

Nero is excellent, and I think you may be right about Microsoft.

I use Sonic Record Now
Does a great job. It will even burn my MP3s to a CD for playing in a car or home stereo.

It's not the application or recorder...it's the cd format type issue

I have to shout love for Nero too.

Also, it's been a big headache over Vista and file transfer times, so unfortunately the burn time sounds about right. >.>

Macs can read Joliet file system fine.. i think Vista screwed the cd's (its windows that can't read the HFS format without a special app)
