The beige vest re-visited - PacAce please note.

In an earlier thread (too long to bump up here) the question was asked about who wore a beige shooter's vest. I said I had a black one (Tamrac) and my beige one was so worn it wasn't fit for a tramp to wear and anyway, it made me look like a game warden.

Well, my wife must have had one of those strange buying moments that women get, and guess what has been delivered today? A Domke beige vest, just like my old one, but clean and without holes or rips. She said "I thought it would be nice to start of this year's racing season looking smart". Just when the Tamrac is starting to look lived in after last season I go back to looking like a newbie again.

Darn it PacAce, I blame you for bringing up the subject. Game warden, carrier personell...... mutter....mutter..... :wink:

So which do you like better, the Tamrac or Domke?

And how do you think either would compare to LL Rue's http://www.rue.com/vest.html?

One thing I like is that the Rue has hooks on the shoulder so you can attach the camera directly to the vest, relieving your neck.

I think I'm going to have to take a look at a vest. I wear t-shirts in the summer and there is no place I can stash my glasses and other assorted things. I have an old Orvis fly Fishing vest in the basement and tried that on. Looked like a fly fisherman carrrying a camera. Damn, more stuff to buy.

LOL, Kenny! :lol: Sorry about that. Not sure how your wife got wind of that "conversation".

But always being one to rectify a situation I get people into, I'm going to help you out with a suggestion on how you can look like an "old timer" instead of a "newbie". Just do what Levi's does for when they want that "weathered" look in their jeans. Throw you vest into the dryer (on air) and dump a gallon or two of big sized rocks and run if for about 30 minutes or so. That should do the trick. :mrgreen: :lol:

P.S. Just make sure you empty all the pockets first. You don't want to leave a lens or two in there while you're "tumbling" it. :)

Yikes, the Rue vest looks like it could hold as much as my Billingham 555 bag. I only keep two short lenses, the TC's, CF cards, Flash Trax, notepad and small items in my vest, the rest in the Billingham.

With a bag full of gear at least you can put it down when it starts to feel too heavy. I wouldn't fancy lugging a couple of my white lenses in a vest.

Which do I prefer? The Domke I suppose (despite the colour), mainly because of the padded shoulders and larger main front pockets.

She has her own PC and shares the broadband access via a wifi connection. It is basically my fault for setting up this as one of her favourites. Think yourself lucky she only browses and doesn't post.

I got a carpenter's vest from www.duluthtrading.com. It has alot of pockets like a photographers vest, but it doesn't look much different then a casual vest.

Too bad that the rear display on most Canon cameras does not preview the image. If it did, then you could remote that to a flexible flat display on the back of the vest. Then the spectators behind you could watch what you are trying to set up for a shot. Wouldn't that be great if you were a digital photography instructor?
