Hi all

Here is a selection of tonight's shoot of Deep Purple at the Cardiff International Arena.

The only PP that is done on these is exposure. Some of these were shot in 100 ISO.

For anyone who might be covering a show of their's I can tell you that the lighting is extremely camera friendly. They have a video crew with them who films for direct brodcast on screens on either side of the stage. As much as they are catering for the video cameras in lighting it is not ruining the experience for the ticket buyers. And it is a dream for us photogs to shoot.

C&C more than welcome.

I think this is some of your best work. period!

1 is a poster shot. if you could have moved to the left a little more to see if you could have got the drummer in the pic. that would put it over the top.

5 is stunning. pretty much nailed it. okay, i have to agree with rene here that the full guitar head would have been awesome but I see the frame was tight.

If I wasn't actually lying in my bed right now I would have fallen on the floor. Your comments just made my jaw drop. Thank you!

Had I moved slightly to the left the singer would have covered the drummer completely. Damn, why is that shot in jpeg Mfine and not in raw!? It wasn't until I have taken a bunch I started thinking about what setting I was in.

I did a few in 1600 ISO as well and the noise is very much there. Wish I had done them all in 100. I like noise in B&W but not in color.

I will sit and play around with the rest of the shots tomorrow and see what can come out of the ones I would normaly throw away.

This site is teaching me so much.

Again, thank you!

Full headstock on this. Actually full body shot. Face is slight OoF Just cropped and upped the oxposure. No color fix or anything else. WB set to auto on the camera. ISO 100 shot at 1/125 sec f 7.1 using a 50-200 15 year old canon zoom. I love that zoom.

Now I really need some sleep.

Again, thanks! Still picking up my jaw from the floor. I was not expecting that.

#9 is a nice shot of Steve Morse. I wasn't aware he was still playing with them.

I'm on my laptop right now, and they all seem a little dark. Other than that, I like 'em, and agree with the comments about #1...

I wish a few were a bit sharper. Nice framing.

Who's from Deep Purple? It's like a cover band (ducking from ther tomatoes).

Apart from #5, all of the images in the first post seem too dark.
That being said, I like #1 (pity about the feet being cut) and #4. I think #5 could be cropped bottom and left, so the missing headstock gets less attention & the framing is better.

tipsy

I'm afraid i have to agree with Rene.

Alot of the images look a bit dark. i was having the same issue with my monitor a while ago- they appeard fine on mine but under exp on others.

Have a look into Spyder Calibration Software if this is the case for you too.

Aside from the darkness, great images of a great band. i really like the framing of number 8 in particular.

congrats she.

great stuff...god, what happened to Ritchie Blackmore? now I feel old!! i listened to these guys ALOT when growing up... I loved Deep Purple but they lost me in the 80's! Great Photos! I thought John Lord had died, was that him on the keys? looks like him!

i think you and rene need new monitors. lol :D i see what you are saying about darkness, but to me and nonflash photog, they are acceptable to more than acceptable.

Sharpness and noise are acceptable to more than acceptable with 1, 5, 8 being spot on pics to me. blur is not a problem.

8 has a heavy shadow on the mouth and lower jaw in 8, but that could be easily lightened in photoshop.

The drummer shot is one many people would miss, getting a blurry pic instead.

Just woke up. It was almost 6am when I posted the last photo.

1 & 2 has no PP done to them at all. The rest very little. A bit of exposure enhancement here, a crop there. Speaking of crop, last thing that went through my mind was "what if a do a tighter crop on 5 and get the partial headstock out of the equation?" so thanks for confirming my very tired brainwave.

Am doing a bit more to these now and will go through all later. As I've missed half a day du to sleep I have loads to catch up on.

Cheers

Loving #5. Great exposure.

The last DP album Ritchie played on was Perfect Strangers in the mid-80s. After that, he left DP (and rock & roll, for that matter). Lately he's been doing rennesance-era celtic folk music (including jerkins and feathered hats) with Blackmore's Night.

Wrong. The last DP album Ritchie Blackmore played on was Battle Rages On in 1993/4.

Between that and Perfect Strangers was House Of Blue Light and a live album.
