I have a new D60 and a 420EX flash. Here's the dilemma. I love halo or rim lighting outside. Here's an example. The sun is shining behind the subject. I meter the background light falling on the subject. Say its F11. I then meter light falling on the subjects face and its F5.6. How can I get the 420EX to give me a one stop exposure below background light hitting the subject? This flash is auto so I can't use a manual mode and then calculate footage to subject. This may be why I need the 550EX. No I don't want to use a reflector either. I find that if I shoot the subjects face with a one stop difference in background light the highlights in the hair aren't blown out. Anyway how can I cheat the flash or manipulate it to get F8? Is it time for a flash with a manual and adjustable output?

You can't do it by direct settings with the 420EX. You can dial in FEC until you get the results you want by trial and error,if the D60 has FEC.
