Sun is finally out and even though it is a little nippy, I decided to give the 400 F5.6 and 1.4 TC a go.
The dog was willing subject. I think I was a little close.
400F5.6 + 1.4TC handheld.
*edit* AF enabled with the "tape" trick.

Man that is nice and sharp. Nicely done.
I didn't know that your dog could sit that still.
The "tape trick" :?: :?: :?:

Fantastic detail. At that range I am glad it wasn't one of your classic "rear" shots. That would be too much detail. ;)
Looks like that combination works well :)

Sheldon,
Placing a small piece of tape over the 3 contacts on the left side of the TC when you are looking at the side the lens attatchs to.
Velcro, makes anything stay in place

Got a long shot with the tape trick you can post? Like a duck at 100 paces?

Ian, how does it perform with the tape on. Is the focusing eratic and jerky or does it depend on the lighting. I heard (not sure how true this is) that people using the tape have reported their lens going bonkers after a short time of using it with the tape. Any comment?

Leo,
Just took a couple of shots but it is true, in poor light there is a lot of AF hunting. In good light it is quite fast and accurate. Under poor light it would not always lock on. I'm planning on giving it a better workout this weekend. I'll let you know the results.

Scott,
Dog kept on following me around the yard, couldn't get far from her. I'm going to to try ducks tomorrow or Saturday. Will post results if worth posting
