As expected by using a lens hood on my G6 the light from the built in flash is obstructed. I have purchased a Metz 36AF-4C hoping to overcome this problem. The system works well, however in low light situations the flash AF measuring beam fails to work. The camera measuring beam does.
Can anyone please help, is this normal or do I have a possible misfunction

If it helps for comparison, the Canon Speedlite 420EX AF beam works with the dslr and EOS cameras. Neither the G1-G6 nor the Pro1 can take advantage of the flash AF beam.

I am not sure about the G7 behavior with the Canon flashes’ AF beam. I do not know the Metz 36AF-4C either.

As the G6 can not take advantage of the EX flash AF beam, I would think it would not have the necessary connectivity with third party flashes either.
I would expect it to work in all other respects though.

Sorry gents for my late response to your replies, they are much appreciated. I have been out of the UK.

Kind regards to you both

Chalkieman,

If I remember correctly, the reason why the AF beam does not work on the G series is that the g series uses the green photosites to achieve focus (2x as many green as red or blue photosites in the Bayer pattern). Of course, a red AF assist bean would not help much with that...

Best regards,
Andy
