How well will the 488RC2 ball handle a 1D and 300 f/2.8 for Landscape and moon shots?
Anyone using the combination? Is it steady?

It should hold it. For landscapes it shouldn't be a problem. You might get a bit of slip with the angle needed for the moon though. I had mine holding a 1d and 600 level for a bit (until I picked up something just a little more suitable)

Good point, what did you end up getting?

I ended up getting THIS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=126663&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) as a cheaper alternative to the Wimberley gimbals. Definitely a solid setup but might be a bit overkill for your 300. Not the most portable thing either.
