Can someone explain what each of the different options in the 'Categories from IPTC' dropdown on the UPLOAD page mean - I find them to be very cryptic.

Also, I did some testing with one image to try and determine what each option did and I always got the same values in the Category drop-down on my Exhibition page.

Hi,
I think, you could have a look at this thread:

Start with the third post from Pekka.

PS: unfortunately I can not try all this stuff, because I have at the moment trouble to set up EE correct.
But I am going to find a new provider and the set up EE fresh.

Because IPTC category data can have one main category and several subcategories this selection gives a choice to build a category name out of them.

Selections explained:

If image has main category SPO and subcategories 'javeling', 'golf' and 'tennis':

do not add new categories

(no function)

add subcategories only ....

EE builds category names

javeling
golf
tennis

and adds them to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns them to the uploaded photo.

add main category (CAT) only

EE builds category name

SPO

and adds it to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns it to the uploaded photo.

add all separately

EE builds category names

SPO
javeling
golf
tennis

and adds them to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns them to the uploaded photo.

as 'subcategory (CAT)'

EE builds category names

javeling (SPO)
golf (SPO)
tennis (SPO)

and adds them to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns them to the uploaded photo.

as 'CAT: subcategory'

EE builds category names

SPO: javeling
SPO: golf
SPO: tennis

and adds them to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns them to the uploaded photo.

as 'CAT | subcategory'

EE builds category names

SPO | javeling
SPO | golf
SPO | tennis

and adds them to EE (if they do not exist already) and assigns them to the uploaded photo.

If you wonder why categories are not added: perhaps your photos do not have categories as IPTC or XMP data at all? Go to graphics modules editor, choose one of the problem photos from dropdown list and press "VIEW COMBINED CAMERA DATA". Now you see a list of data that EE can gather from photo - see what it has in category fields.
