How many REAL Keepers?

Just wondered, on average how many REAL GREAT (in your eyes) shots do you get on an average wedding shoot.

I see from may sites that you guys take several hundred shots (500-800 from what i've seen) but only actually display 2 or 3 hundred for your clients.

Of those how many on average are good enough to use as your advertising material with the wow factor we all crave?

I know myself shooting sport i'll rattle off hundreds but only a handfull are first look keeps... second scan i usally pick out allot more as good images but they usally don't have the first impression impact i'm after.

Also do you find your favourites are usally the best sellers or do your clients and family usally go for the safe option technically correct images like their parents had.

I show 200 to 400 pictures on a gallery and I suppose I have 10 that I like, the clients might like a lot more but thats the public for you.

I show most of the shots that can be shown as so many times a shot that I thought crap the client has loved, so now they see the rougth with the smooth :-)

The amount of times with my equine photography where I dump every shot taken with out looking at any of them on the website I have an email with a picture number and when I proccess it I think WHAT a poor picture but when I phone the client and say look its not the best picture they just dont care it is what THEY want.

From 900 or so shot I have usually get anywhere between 5 and 15 that I think are great. Occasionally I don't get any, occasionally I get 30. Depends on your definition of great.

Difficult question...are you asking EXCEPTIONAL images out of a wedding, and/or what's acceptable yet still salable?

My numbers are this: I throw away about 1/4th to 1/3rd of the images I take, leaving 2/3 (approx) salable images. As for exceptional images per wedding, I guess I have 3-5 that I select for wall displays or website galleries.

I get a quarter of the shots that I really like, but I take multiple images usually

I got about 3 shots from my first wedding and about 5 from my second wedding that I was really pleased with.

Thanks for the replys. That was what i hoping you would all say. Atleast i know my expectations of getting the odd one being special are in the real world and not kidding myself.
