I just got my 70 - 200mm f/2.8 IS. I assume I'll use it with IS always on, but it has an off switch. When should I turn it off?

When you can use or want to use a tripod , you've got turn it off other wise you will get more shake .

Whenever it is mounted to a tripod. Or you are shooting with a high enough shutter that it is not needed and you want to save battery life.
EDIT: Looks like I didn't type fast enough. lol

there really isn't any time you need to turn it off unless you need to squeeze every ounce of juice out of your battery. the older versions of IS needed to be turned off when placed on a tripod, but that's not the case with your lens. If you're shooting at high shutter speeds (like 1/1000 and up) then IS is doing no good anyway, so you could turn it off.
edit: I really didn't type fast enough, heh.

you never have to turn it off. if its on a tripod it will detect that it doesnt need to be used and will turn itself off. and there is no other reason to turn it off. it doesnt highly affect battery usage, and there is no disadvatage to it being on in any situation.

Okay. Got it. Thanks. I am so excited to use this lens. Unfortunately, the camera body won't arrive til Monday.... It's gonna be a long weekend.

Do you know which lenses need IS off when tripod mounted? I remember having my 28-135mm mounted to a tripod taking some longer exposures of the city/traffic and and got some pretty bizzar affects around the street lights.
Thanks

I turn it of when I'm panning a bird in flight, or something else at a non-horizontal pan. It can really screw up a shot. You can watch the IS jerking it's way through your pan. Mode 2 is great if your panning horizontal(or close to it).

I turn it off when shooting sports, especially on the 300mm. The shake correction annoys the heck out me when I'm moving the lens around quickly because everything just kind of sways around in the viewfinder instead of moving with the camera. The IS doesn't help in these situations anyway.

I just love peeps who give advice about something b/c they read it somewhere .. ;)
I've always used mine on or off the pod with IS on .. Matter o-fact to prevent accidental mishaps I have the buttons covered with tape to keep me from bumping them off i.e. AF/IS ... when shooting for dollars I like to focus on getting the shot vs the tech stuff as much so it's protect me from me ;)
