Welcome! I've only been here about a month myself but I can assure you that you can learn just about anything you'll need to know by reading this board. I've found that most of the members are patient, kind, and eager to help beginners like us. Also, while I doubt I will need any advice on makeup, I certainly appreciate the offer. :D
BTW, wanna trade friends? :D

Welcome
Practice, practice, practice.
As you fous on your interests you will find others here who share intrest in that type of photography. Enjoy!
My standard warning:
"You will be encouraged to spend all your money."

"venenoazteca",
Practice a little with your camera until you know all of the controls and buttons. Practice a little more until you like photography.
Then, sign up for a photography class taught by some local community college or local recreation center. Generally, they give you little assignments of what to practice on, and that will help a lot.
Then practice more.

Welcome!
What they said, and don't be afraid to post photos to the Share and Critique forums. We're don't bite, and pointers on a photo can help tremendously.

Hey welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find a lot of good support here, don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
As far as make-up... do you know a good source for getting crusty dirt-like makeup that cakes on and cracks and stuff? I'm intersted in doing some wilder stuff with my models and need a good make-up source. (I know NOTHING about make-up!)

I would highly recommend all of Freeman Patterson's books. Especially
1) Photography for the joy of it,
2) Photography of Natural Things, and
3) Photography and the Art of Seeing.

Welcome, Monica.
You have some pretty nice friends. I could use a few like them.
Everything that's been said so far is good information. The beauty of digital is that you can play and experiment to your heart's content and you don't have to pay for processing. By so doing, you'll learn while you're having fun.
You'll find things that work for you, and you'll incorporate those techniques into your bag of tricks. When things don't work when you think they should, come and ask us. Someone here will have a suggestion for you to try.
Good luck.

Hi Monica,
feel welcome to the forum!
Being a makeup artist, you surely have a great 'eye' for human faces ... so we're all eager to see your portraits !
But don't be afraid ... you don't have to show us your results immediately ... amazing enough, some guys stick around this forum for some 2000 posts without ever posting a shot apart from lens comparisons
Best regards,
Andy
