I don't know exactly what you mean by portraits or concert photography, but the 85 1.8 and 50 1.4 are quite good for the money.

For $300.00 I'd recommend the EF85-1.8 or the EF100-2.0.

I just meant how close, how many people, head and shoulders or full body, etc.

Ronald is correct. When you say concert photography, are you talking with a backstage pass, so you'll be close, such that you could use the 85 1.8? Or are you talking being in the audience, perhaps a hundred or more feet away, in which case with the difficulty of bringing in a long lens, etc., you'd be better off with a P&S with a long zoom.

Head and shoulders portraits with an Xti: 50mm/1.4
Close head shots and fashion: 85/1.8 or 100/2.0
Close shots at a concert and full body portraits: 30/1.4

85/1.8 or 50/1.4, each are around $300. If you are really at the front of the stage, the 85 will get you isolated to 1 person, the 50 will obviously be a little wider and might get 2 in a shot depending how close together they are.

Here's a field of view calculator that can help you decide the right focal length for your distance.
