Would the 17-55 2.8 IS would be the best lens for live concert photography? Thank you!

How close will you be? You may need something longer as well.

70-200 2.8 with or without IS depending on style of music, lighting conditions, and budget.

that's unless you're getting damn close, but in general most performance photography requires the photographer to not get in the way or be a distaction, hence you need more reach for the distance you'll need to cover.

yeah 70-200 is generally thought of as the best range for concert photography

If your going zoom, the 70-200 f2.8 IS is the perfect lens for this application. However, if you don't mind prime for about half the price of the 70-200 you can get the 135 f2L.

Most depends on you and what you want to capture. I use the 85 1.8 and 135L for live concerts. I have no interest in capturing a wider view and generally focus on individuals as tight as I can get them.

They are both oustanding indoor low light performers.

Of course where you are seated matters and if I can't get to where I want to be, then I take what I can get. I shoot only with primes so if you are concerned about distance (the right spot etc.) maybe you might feel more comfortable with a zoom.

Good luck. As you can see, everbodys different.
