OK, so I'm an idiot ???
But how do I adjust the Canon Speedlite 550EX to get as LITTLE flash out of it as possible?
Also , What camera type do you set it on when using it on a Digital Rebel (Type A or B )?

Manually, as in manual mode. Set it to the lowest power, widest f stop.

I'm sorry my answer was not as specific as you needed it. The exposure modes on the camera, M, Tv, Av, P have no direct effect on flash output. They only control ambient light exposure, so I didn't think I needed to specify.

I'm sorry I'm really dumb when it comes to flash.
I'm used to shooting concerts I hardly ever used flash.

Hey, there are lots of areas to be dumb in. If your only area is flash, your way ahead of me!

where should I set the zoom?
Digital Rebel, right? You should not have to set the zoom manually at all. The flash should read the lens and set that way. The exception is when you have the little white diffuser panel pulled down over the flash head. Then it goes as wide as possible. As soon as you flip that up and slide it back into the flash head, the auto-zoom should work, as long as it gets good data from the lens.
Now, with the Digital Rebel, you have a x1.6 factor hidden in there. Ignore that. That only means that the light will be going wider than it needs to be, so a little light is wasted. No biggie.

Well, other than the fact that the flash doesn't produce its rated guide number (as if the ones published by camera manufacturers ever really do).
It's kind of annoying, really, considering that the 300D could just as properly report the effective angle of view, instead. Canon (and others) it seems, decided at some point that they would not report 'effective' focal lengths, either to the flash head, or in the EXIF information in the shot.
I'm not sure I care much about the EXIF, as long as I'm aware of it, but it's kind of a bummer when you are using an auto-zoom head.
