Arlo played at the Scottsdale Fine Arts Center this past Saturday evening. I'm using my 30D with the 28-135 lens. A little more light would have been real nice. I was shooting at ISO 400 for most of the evening and I should have gone higher, but I was not sure how much that would have effected the quality of the pics. Instead, I suffered with slower shutter speeds and the results speak for themself.
Arlo was there with his son Abe, daughter Sarah Lee, her husband John and another guitarist whose name I can not recall.

I wonder if he washes his hair with Dreft ... it kinda has the effervescent, flourescening glow to it! This are fine! I do wonder why he has so many bottle of water spread around?

"A little more light" and "ISO 400" in the same sentence?
Nice to see that Arlo is still around... Last I saw of him was on a "woodstock" video. Kinda different.

Different sentences wanker! :p
Seriously, help a noob understand a better way to have captured the images with more sharpness.

Don't be afraid to crank the iso to 800 or 1600, the 30D can handle it. I use 800 when I have 'good' lighting. A fast lens (with a large maximum aperture) like a 2.8 zoom or a prime helps a lot too.

I usually shoot ISO 1600, f/2.8 or faster...
That being said: I think the results you got at ISO 400 with a slow lens are quite okay..

A good quality fast lens is on my Xmas list. And I'll crank it up next time.

My fav. of the set is #3...
Arlo was one of my favorites during the late 60's and all through the 70's...
I made the same mistake on my first day with the 28-135 IS, ISO 400, and the 30D... Shooting at ISO 400 was real tough... (It was an upgrade from a film SLR...)
Now I shoot primarily at 1000, 1250 and 1600... Got different "glass" since then too... but the 28-135 IS is still a pretty good lens...

Yeah, Arlo is great, but I must say that this gig was probably one of the best you could imagine. He dug out a ton of his dad's old stuff, and his daughter Sarah had plenty of her own. And she has the voice of an angel. Arlo can stand on his own to some extent, but he is somewhat limited in his quanty/quality of song. Bringing in the generations of the past, present and future (his 4 year old grandaughter, Olivia sang too), he has a winner there.
And thanks for the comments.

Scott, These aren't bad at all for iso 400. ;)
Arlo Guthrie? Now THAT concert would have been a HOOT!
Somehow I doubt he did the long version of "Alice's Restaraunt" live. That would have been the whole concert.
Now curious what his song list was?

Bruce, he knocked out Alice's Restaurant and did the whole thing. It was great. He also did Coming In To Los Angeles. He did not do the pickle/motorsickle song or City Of New Orleans, although I did get to hear those two last time I saw him. Many of the tunes he did this time were his dads. Sarah Lee and John also had a few of their own.
As usual with an Arlo concert, in 2.5 hours you get 1.5 hours of great stories and an hour of music.

Ok kids..........Here is why I do not like high ISO settings. No, it's not performing arts, but it is relevant to the pics I took the other night.
I took this pic a few minutes ago. See the lines? Not good.

What say you?
I say ISO 400 or less whenever possible. Maybe suffer a litle camera shake.

I say EXIF might help.
What Camera? What ISO? Shot raw and corrected exposure? AiServo?
Some cameras can be affected by banding, some are when using AiServo AF. Some additional info might be usefull.
I rarely shoot lower then ISO 1250...

This post reminds me of just how much I don't know about digital photography.
Let me do my homework on this and get back to you.
But the basic info is that this was shot at ISO 1000 with my 30D with a Canon 28-135.

You might want to start a new thread about it then... ;)
A 30D should do better at ISO 1000 IMO.

I had the pleasure of meeting Arlo a few years ago. A really, really nice guy, and a Helluva' songwriter.
Nice shots of him. I'd like to think he'd find his way back to San Diego sometime soon...

I like #3 as well. I also really like the last shot of the three of them on the smugmug site. Great exposure there. :)
ISO 1600 is not bad on my 20D unless it's really underexposed most of the time. However on my Cannon S3IS, the pics are pretty noisy at 800 if it is underexposed in the least, so the camera you are using makes a difference. I agree that a 30D 1600 should be fine. I did the same thing. I was working hospitality for Veggietales and took my 20D right after I bought it. I didn't even know how to change the ISO, so another gal there had used one before and changed it to 400 for me. I was afraid to try higher. It was tough. I got a few really excellent pics, but most were really blurry.
