I am way behind, as always, sigh. But, with Jamie Foxx and ZZ Top in the pipeline I realized I better do something. I have purchased yet another new image gallery tool and am trying to figure it out. Please note that EXIF is back with this system. I will give a link to the gallery on my website at the bottom. In the meantime, here's Jo Dee:

#1 The collage!

#5 And she can play, too.

#6 A bit expressive ... sorry I clipped her fingers:

#7 Thumbs up!

#8 Shutter drag without the flash:

So, there you have and the rest are at http://www.dwightmccann.com/ChumashCasinoResort/JoDeeMessina04132007.html in a gallery built with Project Seven's SlideShowMagic ... got a few issues but I can probably live with it.

Hey, buddy, some of us are simply 'shutter drag' challenged ... we're not allowed to use flash! :o

Great energy...sharp a a tack... Excellent collage and set...

(I'm still scrambling to learn to set the shutter... Shutter drag will just have to wait from this end...I'm not trying it, till I get done taking all the pics needed at a show 1st...)

No wonder you're having trouble, John, if you think #8 is tack sharp!:lol::lol:

Well, other than # 8, they are sharp... I just don't include the shutter drag stuff in the equation yet, Dwight... It's obviously not part of your set. Or are you developing a new style? :D

Naw, you and I are on the same page, for sure! I only include some of this other stuff now and then so people don't accuse me of being trapped in the box ... although the box of excellence seems like as good a place as any! Maybe I should let them have to go to my website to see the 'undercard' as it were! ;) I expect that Rene will look at number 8 and start in on his 'red channel is blown' speech ... he's always right and I wouldn't have him not do it for anything but it is fun to make note of it.

We don't want to give Rene' too much to run with... He is relentless you know... especially if someone blows a channel...;)

And of course, I'll never hear the end of it... He'll be on my case for sure now...

Nice series Dwight, they seem about a half stop overexposed to me. I looked at the histogram and it did show some clipping on the highlights. A shame on the clipped fingers in 6 and the top of her head in 7, the exposure on 7 looks perfect. I really like #5, I'd straighten it just a touch though.

It is nice to see how you captured her energy, I've heard she puts on a very good show.

***edit*** going through the EXIF data it looks like the ones I think are overexposed are the ones that were +.67 - +1.33 on your bracket. I would bet the one that was 0.0 was perfect in those shots.

Say Chris...

How did you get the histogram info of the EXIF...

Or is that a different program?

Pity she's wearing a light jeans: get's more light then the face...

Again the spot isn't lighting her feet. You might wanna talk with the light guy about that ;)

Some nice expressions, but an awfull lot of crap on stage in the BG. Nothing you can do about that... Same goes for the big guy sitting in the center aisle in the collage.

I like #2 best. Maybe darken the jeans a bit?

Portrait shot in the collage is nice as well, byt her feet are missing?

Pity about the clipped channel in the last

I noticed the the big guy in the aisle too, Rene'... I often moved the end aisle seat a foot or so, but not right into the center...You would think the guy owns the place... but then, he's gotta fit some where...

The stage looks OK, (not too cluttered) in the collage... It's those elevated platforms that make it tough...

Jo Dee Messina was here in PA, just over a year ago...Back then, I still had my film SLR...

It is his calling in life ... kinda like a religion ... I just hope never gives it up as I consistently benefit from his sharing of the lessons he has learned!

The look good on my calibrated monitor! :-) Say, have you tried my Spyder on your laptop or home computer? I'm gonna need it back in about a week as it is time to recalibrate my monitors. Oh, and the metering is done in the AF point which often is not on 18% gray so the EC is not a good thing to go by. And there is often clipping due to scene contrast so I am most concerned with facial exposure.

Pity she's wearing a light jeans: get's more light then the face...

She certainly didn't dress particularly well but they have been on the road and only got two hours sleep the night before this concert. She puts on an excellent show, moves continuously which is good and bad.

The spotlight direction is given by her LD to our spotlight people, usually four of them. I don't know why but often they seem to have their aperature too small cutting off pieces here and there.

LightRoom doesn't allow selections so it would be a lot more work to have it pass the image to PS and back, although that is supported. Things that I would do for portraits or landscapes I don't think appropriate or necessary for Live Entertainment ... or maybe I'm just lazy!

And I believe that statement is "Hell has, officially, just frozen over"...
Oh, come on, I've posted a few long exposures before ... I think.

Anyway, I thank you all for your continued support. Jamie Foxx and ZZ Top are in the pipeline.

Just giving Rene" a ribbing  ... His feedback is accurate and always useful...:D I'm still trying to get familiar with some of his techniques... They always seem to work out for the better...

As for Ice Skating in Hell... well seriously now... do you really think we all need to rush and have our ice skates sharpened, just in case?

I've not yet tried it on the home pc, probably won't on the laptop. Although a calibrated vs non calibrated monitor has nothing to do with the histogram. The detail in the torn jeans is missing. I can understand not paying the same level of detail on a concert image as a portrait but......I thought we were talking about the best?:p

Calibration is for both color and dynamic range. And you are correct, I am less concerned about detail in the tear of jeans than a face ... that is why mine are best! :p

I'm not sure what this is in answer to but (1) histogram clipping is not universally bad and in many situations is unavoidable anyway, and (2) calibratioin is critical when commenting on color cast or exposure. (3) One must also consider the age of the eyes of the viewer and the brightness required to trigger off his rods and cones, so to speak!

OK....you are right..I mean you can't go against the best right....

I don't disagree that sometimes clipping can't be helped, but I also know there are solutions in post processing to reduce the impact thereof.

Calibration is critical on color cast..not as much on exposure if you are looking at a histogram. The histogram is data based not color or monitor settings. I would bet a histogram would look pretty darn close to the same on a world class monitor or a stander 15" Dell.

I have no clue what you are talking about in 3.

Well, I can see we've about squeezed the juice out of this thread sarcasm and insult-wise, as usual ... makes me feel "at home" at last! So, on a more mundane note, is FSM gonna' run an article on our outing to the Cadillac? And what was the result of the issues you were resolving on the phone while we were waiting for Marna?

taygull
30th of April 2007 (Mon), 16:04
I didn't see any insults....everything is great, I'm not sure about the review yet...the editor is the one who usually makes the decision.

I thought we were having a true debate on images and workflow...I was hoping to learn something.....

Lest you forget so soon Professor Dwight- Its Kathy :) I don't know when Chris and I will get to shoot together again- he was supposed to help me with a wedding in May but he will not be able to make it...but..we will work together again soon. It was fun.

Well, for all the good it does you to tell me what you really think that will probably work better! It's just so hard to agree with you even when you're right ... and I am so weak of character!

Let no one ever say it is not fun to work with Chris! And he does more by accident than I do on purpose, so I'm not surprised he is having trouble breaking loose for you.

I'm having a similar issue ... just got a call from the casino's PR outfit asking for "a bid" on shooting some portraits. Had to tell her that I would bid high in hopes of not getting the job as I am up to my ass in alligators, even though I know all the subjects and would do it for free if I could ... but then I told her that if they ran into issues and got pushed to the wall to call me and I would do whatever I could. There are half a dozen wedding photographers in town that really want to break into the casino PR workflow but somehow it just hasn't happened.

It's a 2 minute job, if that: Make two conversions in LR, copy-paste the dark one on top of the light one, and use a mask to reveal only the pants on the dark one...
