I was just saying that I used a Polarizer for this shot which makes a big difference. Thought I'd mention it because it is fairly easy to recognize in sunny shots but not so much in overcast images.

Has anyone who uses CPL with 10-22mm had any problems or issues? I have seen some example where sky looked pretty bad - could be user error.

I've had pretty poor results using a CPL with this lens at 10mm. It's too wide for the filter and the color of the sky gets very uneven across the entire picture.

Oh my, those are some absolutely fantastic shots. When you say layering of multiple exposures, are you just referring to HDR/tone mapping, or a more 'custom' workflow in Photoshop? Did you do anything in particular to get the green to pop out more?
Again, fantastic shots. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much! No, it isn't HDR. I just used the sky from one exposure and the rest of the image is from another exposure but it is all blended "by hand" and not through the PS command or Photomatix. Yes, the actual green was more yellow so it was adjusted for contrast, color and levels and also I sharpen only certain parts of the image and not the entire image all together. I also darken and lighten the image with the dodge and burn brush tools as I see it. I should post the RAW shot for kicks, it is pretty ugly.

I know what you mean and if it is a 10mm shot, I just don't use one. Anything over 18mm is okay though; you don't get the uneven sky. ND Grads work better IMO. But for controlling reflections and bringing out detail in the shadows, CPL works great. For example, in the above shots, the stones in the foreground were reflecting a lot of light and without CPL, the color and texture would have been pretty flat.

When people talk about HDR, I imagine they are talking about a few bracketed images that get blended in Photomatix. I also use bracketing but if needed, blend my images by hand using selective masking.

Great advice, thanks for sharing pixel_junkie. I'm mesmerized by the green, so please excuse me if I'm battering on about it! So when you say 'adjusted', how did you select the green? I mean, it's everywhere on those rocks! Did you use magic wand (which seems awfully tedious), or did you use Selective Color or something.
Heck, I think many here would love it if you posted the RAW! Or if you prefer not to, even just the vanilla straight-out-of-camera JPEG.
I also like the vignetting you've thrown in. You should print and frame those - I would. :D

I'm hoping Canon puts out at least a $50-$70 rebate on the EF-S 10-22 this fall! Rebates should be about 2-3 weeks out if Canon follows the same approximate dates as they've done the past couple of years.

I had a B&W that didn't have the front thread and bothered me that I couldn't use my regular CANON cap so now I use Hoya, it is a good one. Call me crazy, but it seemed to ad a green hue also. Don't have that problem with my Hoya, I like it.

Manual, ISO 500, f5.6, 1/40, 18 mm with CPL
Shot raw with post in LR2 (lots of fiddling with fill light, clarity, and vibrance). Distortion correction, noise reduction, and sharpening in elements.
The sky was added. I wrestled with the bushes on the left and right. There were several trees in the original that are gone now -- I couldn't get the blend right. For the clients purposes, this works fine, but I would love to learn how to do a better job of blending the bushes with the replaced sky.
Key to this shot was:
1) Time -- Golden hour, about 30 minutes before sunset (notice the sunlight on the garage roof)
2) Position -- Taken standing on the roof of my truck. The lot falls forward quite a bit, so I think it makes the house look bigger when I got more parallel with it.
Thanks for the interest!

Loving all these shots!
Pixel junkie...could you pretty please email me that info too...that green is stunning and I am trying to decide whether I need Photomatix or if I can go it alone. Thanks!
BTW...I used a Hoya Pro 1 Digital UV filter on the lens for this shot and stacked a plain Hoya Polarizer on top of that. It caused very heavy vignetting at the corners at 10mm. I will try it next time without the UV as I think stacking the two jutted it out too much. I found the polarizer worked evenly on the skies, but made the sky almost too dark blue in some shots. Was also getting down to 1/60th, but this shot was hand held.
Standard Hoya 77mm Circ Polariser here in Australia $88....Hoya Pro 1 Digital Circ Polariser $260. Thought it was worth trying the cheapy, but imagine the Pro one is slimmer too so may be necessary.

Nice, Hazey.
If you could get that set up with a stock agency that services the US, you could probably pick up some sales. We love the idea of windfarms and the environment right now, although it doesn't look like we have the money to pay for either!

Thanks Mattograph...I wouldn't have the first clue how to submit to stock agencies..but it's a real compliment to me that you think the image is nice enough to do so.:)
Skanter...I thought about that but decided I would probably mess it up. However I may have a play. The leaf in the front left hand corner distracts me too so may try cloning that too.

Better quality, more flexibility with a wide-angle lens also with a telophoto lens. (i only have a 17-85).

you dont get much "quality" at that extreme of a zoom. It wouldnt make any sense to make it "better" because they already have a market for it. "better" would cost around 1000$+ and that is what you would want to spend on an L lens which would force you to upgrade to a different body.
CANON already thought of this stuff.

 The first thing you think about when seeing shots you like with a lens is that you wish the lens could be upgraded?
Dude, stop focusing on gear so much (I think I've said this to you many times before). If you like this lens, go buy it and start taking photos with it. Per-pixel sharpness is only a minor part of the formula for a successful photograph. When I first got into photography, I did the usual rounds of worrying about these kinds of things, but that got me nowhere. Now it's all composition, shooting techniques and post-process for me. I don't worry about gear anymore. What did I get out of this? Much better photos.

He's 100% right. Stop worrying about your gear and practice your technique. gear won't make you better. Practicing technique and composition will.

You'd actually be surprised at the bokeh from this lens. All you have to do is get really really close (sometimes a little too close). Here are some other examples of 10-22 bokeh

Dont' shoot past f11 if you want really sharp. Really you should stick with f8 if you want sharp shots and only do f11 if there is something really close you want to have in focus.
Plus its hard to beat the 50mm for sharpness - not really fair.
