Great shot, B! You don't have to align the foliage. If you shot multiple exposures on a tripod, just use the best one and then ad just the best exposed building only via Mask in PS ...

gorgeous picture. There's a certain lack of quality about I can't put my finger on (oversaturated?), but that's only because this landscape seems to beg for perfection. It's an incredible place at a perfect time of day. Those mountains wrapping around the horizon just make it so "storybook", something out of the "fellowship of the ring" ;)

Wow, are those power lines/telephone/catv lines running through that tree? That tree would have been cut down a long time ago over here in the states (even if it's on private property, lines running through trees/limbs is a big no-no that the utility companies enforce rather strictly). They will actually cut the crown of a tree in half vertically, just to maintain the 5-7ft clearance around the line! It looks hideous, but that's what they do.

All these photos were taken handheld at between 1/10 sec and 1/125 sec between f/3.5 and f/8 at 100ISO. All with a 3 stop hard GND filter.
It's one heck of a pricey lens...but so worth it for the fun and versatility

8th of December 2008 (Mon), 16:34
Thanks Damian. Not from a friend..I've had this lens for a while since new but still learning what works to get the best from it. For instance you have to get really close to your foreground interest...that stick in the foreground was literally centimetres from the lens.
The filter is a 0.9 Hard grad ND from Lee.The grad part is not at all that hard...more like a soft grad so suits landscapes really well.
I think I oversaturated the last one a tad...might tone it down a little bit. And just noticed one of my horizons is off.....

Gotta love your depth of field at 10mm.

the hyperfocal length at 10 mm and f16, with your subject one foot way is an amazing 1.11 foot
and blows out to a huge 4.35 feet at f4....

You just have to remove the plastic piece from the back and keep the lens above 11mm.

10-22 is an EF-S lens so unless you replace the mount (i know someone who has done this) you arent gonna be able to even put it on a 5D

imagining you could, you would get a round photo in the middle with black edges corresponding to the smaller size of the EF-S image circle on the larger sensor - taking vignetting to the n-th degree

Not sure if this was meant for me, but no i havent taken the back off the 10-22, its real tempting though- i think it best that i just buy the sigma 12-24 for my 5d.
The last shots were with the 400d. too afraid to take my 5d to work- still my new baby.
5d ref is my signature not my post- need to double space in future me thinks :)

Rent or borrow the 10-22mm and see the difference. 10mm is a very creative focal length.

I would say yes, it would be pointless, UNLESS, you need that focal range on your backup body. You seem to like f2.8 glass, I'd be tempted to sell the 17-40L & put the money you were going to spend on the EF-S 10-22 towards the EF 16-35L f2.8 II (if you've got the upgrade bug) :).

I ultimately picked up the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 instead of the EF-S 10-22 as I needed a faster lens for night shots.

Depends on your shooting style. If you do a lot of night shots - John_TX has a good point about an alternative lens to the 10-22.

If I had your lens lineup, and I was buying a 40D. I would use the 10-22 and the 17-40L (effectively 27-64 on a 1.6 crop camera) on my 40D.

I have the 5D with the 16-35 f/2.8L II and the 40D with the 10-22. I don't feel its pointless at all. Shooting around the city, I do something that was recommended by an experienced PJ - just carry two cameras, one with an ultra wide lens and another with a good telephoto zoom. So I carry the 40D with the 10-22 and the 5D with the 70-200. Neither my 16-35 or your 17-40 on the 40D would allow you to do that. If you're into urban/PJ photography, its something to consider. The photographs in this thread show how good the 10-22 works in a lot of different circumstances. Its my favorite lens on the 40D.

I bought 10-22 and 16-35 both at the same time in the past, why? because that time i had only 350D and 30D, so i want wider, but from what i read i know that i can't use 10-22 on 1-series of FF bodies so that i just made decision before i got any higher level body, just same year i end up with 1D2N then next year beginning [January] with 2 FF at the same time, then i said good buy to my 10-22 and my 16-35 became the king of wide angel, and i still keep my 10-22 just in case [backup].

The new Hoya HD series is interesting. I'm thinking of getting a second CPL dedicated to my 17-55 and were thinking about these. It appears the new HD filters don't offer any sort of performance benefit over those from the Pro1 line, but are simply more resistant to breakage, staining and scratching. The anti-staining is good though - I always found Hoya's UV filters to be annoying to clean, atleast.
