You guys and your phenomenal wide pictures! I was just going to wait to go FF to get the kind of awesome wide shot's I've seen on the past 100+ pages, but as of a lil while ago, I put in an order for my very own 10-22. Can't wait to try it out!

10-22 is an EF-S lens so unless you replace the mount (i know someone who has done this) you arent gonna be able to even put it on a 5D

imagining you could, you would get a round photo in the middle with black edges corresponding to the smaller size of the EF-S image circle on the larger sensor - taking vignetting to the n-th degree
Not sure if this was meant for me, but no i havent taken the back off the 10-22, its real tempting though- i think it best that i just buy the sigma 12-24 for my 5d.
The last shots were with the 400d. too afraid to take my 5d to work- still my new baby.
5d ref is my signature not my post- need to double space in future me thinks

You can take the part out so you can use the 10-22 on full frame and 1.3 crop. You just can't shoot at anything under 12 mm, or the mirror might hit the lens.

Photo 3-5 is a 1ds MKIII with 10-22

Although I won't be buying this lens (FF soon) I have been trying it for the last few days. 10mm on a crop is such a fun width.

Anyway, here is a picture I took:

miss the lens very much, sold it along with the 20D to buy a 5D M1

not great shots (and wide), but straight out of the camera no PP (except sharpness)

I wouldn't think so.. as the long shutter speeds required for a (great) shot like that wouldn't be attainable in a moving helicopter. More likely some tripod work in a high-rise.

Towers in cities often have legislation which dictate that they must be taller than other buildings in the area (or often, the entire metropolis).

It is perfect for real-estate/architectural photography and definitely will be wide enough. It may even be too wide. I work for an architecture firm and it is all I ever use when shooting buildings. Just learn how to correct the distortion in PP (if you don't know) because there will be some.

Yes the distortion is there, but sometimes it is either what you want or no option. The programs exist to reduce it, but I think it lends to the "moment" sometimes.

I'm with you there. I used to use Photomatix but never got the results I wanted. I've, however, used quite a few HDR tools from Mediachance and I agree they're very good. If you've still got your licence for Photomatix, try the newest version. I downloaded it the other day and it's far better than the one I used when I first bought it. Cheers mate!

Great photos all!

I'm looking at getting a CPL for my upcoming vacation....(think water and sun)

I would like something that works on this lens and can also be used for my 17-55 and my future 70-200, all 77mm. I know that the problem lens for putting a filter on will the the 10-22 and not the other two. I would like something that the cap still fits on also so that i don't have to always remove it to store the camera back in the bag until the next photo. I would like to get something quality but not break the bank. Anyone have any suggestions?

Not sure if you're looking for C&C, but the blown parts of the sky really detract from the image. You've got a underexposed foreground and a sky with blown clouds. If you did HDR on this shot, it would have looked much, much better. I see similar issues with some other latest shots in your Flickr.

You should also consider making the 'Life CAPTURE' transparent. It looks very tacky and noticable when it doesn't merge into the image.

C&C always welcomed. Just been reading Rene's thread on colour management. Have re calibrated my imac to adobe 98 and now i can see it is blown, my mac monitor was showin it about 2 stops darker. Whats weird is that when i print its even darker. I had always intended to calibrate my monitor- this will prove to be a catalyst me thinks.

It's critical to getting the best results you can possibly get. For landscapes, where there are often dynamic range issues, you'd be doing your photos a huge disservice by not considering post-process. It's all part of the process of getting the final product. For scenes with a high DR, shooting the shots is often only half the job.

yes, my macbook pro monitor is calibrated as is the monitor on my pc.
I'm sure I'll get a few people upset here but my opinion is that post processing on a non calibrated monitor is pretty much a waste of time. especially if you output prints or own your own printer (which is my case)
I spend a lot of time in post with some images trying to visually convey a feeling which would be completely lost if what came out of my printer wasnt what I was seeing on my screen. now, as far as others viewing your work on their computers, well that something you cant even begin to control so no sense in even worrying about it.

Best,

hmmm, I was refering to me editing his image that he posted of the ruins. maybe that was misunderstood.
but I absolutely agree with you. now there is nothing wrong with taking images straight out of the camera if thats whats pleases you.
myself though, I think there is a tremendous amount of creativity in post processing.
and if you think those photos that actually evoke an audible WOW from you are straight out of the camera, its most likely they're not and someone spent some time massaging them. the trick is to make them look like you didnt spend any time on them!

great shot, how many pictures were in the stitch?

It was only 3 shots. I really had no intention of making a pano when I took the shots, but during post, saw that those three pretty much lined up and it would look neat to do a shore-to-shore pano.

If I had to do it again, I would have framed the shots better and done each one as a 3-shot HDR and then pano'd the HDR's.

:rolleyes:I am considdering getting this lens.....I was going to use it for wedding parties so I can get the whole family in at a closer range.. would you guys say this lens would be good for that or am I getting the wrong lens.... I currently have a EOS XSI Camera (with the 18-55mm stock lens that I never use), I use the lens off of my EOS 1X APS which is a 24-85mm and also a 75-300mm zoom. please email me to answer this Thanks

The 10-22 would do the job of "getting them all in" when you're short of space, but putting people near the corners of a rectilinear ultrawide can distort them into unflattering shapes and should be avoided if at all possible. You may well find your 18-55 wide enough for that purpose, unless the venue is small or the group enormous.

However, if you have other uses for an ultrawide, it's a mighty fine lens. I wouldn't be without mine.

1. until what focal length's is the max aperture f3.5? (10mm to ??mm)
2. at what focal length does the max aperture become f4.5?
3. is this lens sharp wide open or does it need to be stopped down a little?

im considering this lens as i need a wide angle zoom, i am also considering the Tokina 12-24.

Heres a recent one from my vacation in the middle of WA. Can't compare it with the 100%... so much detail already lost

I love these examples. This looks like a lens I'd love shooting with, once I get enough money saved up anyway. :)
