Found a new favortie lens, was given the Canon 10-22 for Christmas and just had a real chance to use it walking around the Queen Mary. With all the close quarters on the ship the wide angle sure worked out great.

These are awesome photos! When using your WA lens, are you on the ground taking these photos or are you standing up? I am especially interested in the one with the wire fence and flowers.
TIA
keith breazeal
5th of April 2009 (Sun), 18:54
The first is standing, second one I'm face in the flowers, third(fence) I'm kneeling and about 2-3 feet from the ground. I shot the fence several times with different perspectives. This particular one I tried to keep the post vertical and align the second wire down with the top of the hill on the left. It's hard to just the slope on the fence shot, so refer to photo #1 and look at the fence going up the hill side- it's the same fence as #3. ( ! )

Just picked up this lens over the weekend and really loving it. I didn't get the hood or UV filter yet and was wondering what everyone recommends? searched through this thread and didn't find much. I was looking at Hoya super multi-coat (s-hmc)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=94134&is=REG#accessories
I'm assuming the "s" is for slim? as in for wide angle lenses?.....just want to make sure I don't get much or any vignetting.
thanks

they were out of stock of the hoods where I bought it. So i'm probably going to pick one up from B+H. I'm on the fence about filters, but because the hood is so big and wide I was wondering how much "protection" it really affords.

Nice! how i wish we had airforce bases like these in Holland. When I was a kid I used to live near one, and I loved staring at the F15's flying over. But those were replaced by F-16's when I was a teenager. But that was one of the few bases we had, (not accessible to civilians either) and it closed down not too long ago. Oh well, I'll probably go spot some JSF's with my kids in the near future ;)

These are using the 10-22 on a 1D3. First shot at about 12mm and the second at 14mm. You can't go much below 12mm without vignetting and below 11mm is dangerous I hear.

Did you use a polarizer on any of those? Especially the third shot. That's an extremely wide shot for a polarizer, yet the sky remained very uniform! I'm curious as to your technique!

I'm curious as to your technique!B+W circular polarizer on all of them - no technique really...just turning the filter manually for desired effect. I just bought it about a month ago and am still getting used to it. It seems to work best with the sun at my back...otherwise I get the whiteness on one of the corners like in #3.

Good deal. The sun must have been in the perfect position for that shot, as I'm usually not that lucky (the sun is usually in the wrong position to either get the framing I want or the uniform polarizing effect.

I was looking to go there no doubt one day, but as long i went to New Zealand i don't feel i must visit C.R. then, both are so beautiful countries, and New Zealand has everything that Costa Rica has, so what will make me to go to Costa Rica and see what isn't there in NZ?!!!

I don't know. Never been to NZ, it's on my short list though. One thing that stands out about CR (I'm not sure that NZ is the same way) is that is that the place is just like a zoo except the animals are not caged. Toward the end of our trip, couple of times I had to go to the bathroom in the bushes (#1) and I held it in because I was too scared. There's just so much stuff crawling and moving around, it's unbelievable. Pretty exciting if you like that kind of stuff. It was borderline too much for me ... And the other cool thing - it is suuuuper cheap.

I know this is not a critique thread, but for car shots you really ought to try getting down lower for wide shots like these. You can give the wideangle effect much more impact. Give it a try next time :)

I am using the self timer- the cable remote isn't long enough. Canon makes an extension for it, but that's 75 feet long! The 10 second delay is perfect to hoist, aim, steady, then fire. It takes a few shots sometimes. The lens is so wide, your perspectives can be a challenge but need to be faily good. Shooting blind isn't going to be perfect. Try giving the subject enough area around it to allow cropping. It's more fun when the wind start picking up.

When I do airshows, this lens stays on the 40D. Early morning or evening is my favorite time to shoot the aircraft on the ground. Sometimes I'm running around like crazy trying to get as many aircraft photographed before all the activity starts. When I saw this plane, I stopped and gave it more of my attention. I took several angles and loked this one. Just something about it....

I feel the 10-22mm lens is much better than my 17-85mm lens at the same ranges (17-22).

10-22 = 13 elements/10 groups ($699), whereas the entry level 18-55 = 11 elements/9 groups ($130). Other than that, the only other comparison one can make is physical dimensions and weight. Beyond that, the two are in a different league altogether, thus the huge price difference.
Rather than belaboring these points, it would be more informative if you wandered over to http://thedigitalpicture.com, and read the excellent reviews for both of these lenses.

Actually, I don't think you "sit" on that bike but lay on it. Notice where the rear break pedal and right foot peg are. It probably does function BUT I would not be comfortable lying 3" above 2 running motorcycle engines. The heat must be incredible.
And regarding the girl, if you had the lens at full wide-angle, ie 10mm, you would have had to practically be in that pipe to get the shot. And that would have created some very interesting distortion.
