Why is that strange? If you want star streaks, you need very long exposure times...
wow calm down, i've never done star streaks.

Now's the time to learn. Grab that tripod, aim your 10-22 at the sky, put your camera in Bulb, use a simple remote switch with a locking Hold, and practice with different timed exposures. Make sure you use a fresh battery. For really circular streaks, point the camera at Polaris which sits at the tail of Ursa Minor. The whole sky revolves around Polaris. Use the more visible Ursa Major to guide you to Polaris, as shown below...

Great photos from everyone! Does anyone have any negative feedback from this lens? I ordered mine a few days ago and it is somewhere between Grove City, OH and South Charleston, WV. I should get it today, but was just curious if this lens has any cons. I've personally heard outstanding results from this lens.

Just watch out when you shoot at 10mm focal length. Barrel distortion can make people look funny. Example. lol

That's not barrel distortion (the 10-22 doesn't suffer badly from that), it is perspective distortion, caused purely by the fact that nearer parts of the subject are so much closer than the further parts.
Burnaby
2nd of October 2009 (Fri), 22:49
A convex mirror will give you that effect; no barrel distortion there...

Thanks guys for the feedback.. The lens arrived today.. No complaints from it yet.. It appears to be a decent lens. I was surprised at so heavy it is! That's a good thing though, it just proves that it's a well built lens. I look forward to trying this lens out tomorrow with a nice day of weather anticipated.

Wow, some great shots on here using this lens. I bought the Canon 100mm Macro lens about 6 months ago but haven't been using it as much as I should. Am seriously considering selling it and getting this lens instead. I spend a lot of time taking shots with no-one in them (landscapes etc) so it might be worth the switch. (And adding a 50mm 1.8 II as well, given they're cheap as chips)
Will have to get the 100mm out now and take some shots with it to try to convince myself I still need it haha. I don't seem to spend enough time annoying small insects and getting close enough to see their internal workings to warrant it.
Am thinking this lens, a 50mm 1.8 and one of the 70-200mm L lenses would go together nicely.
Next week that'll probably change though :D

Hey guys,
Sorry to butt in, but I'm in Korea at the moment too and read your comments on the beaches...you're right, they're not good! haha
I've struggled for motivation to go out and take shots at times too, and bought a 100mm Macro lens from good old PixDix about 6 months ago. Am thinking about swapping it for this lens though as I don't use it much. Don't seem to find a lot of things to get up close and personal to in Korea to shoot with it. Will take it to Aus and see how I go and then decide I think.

Life on deployment is tough. In my 20 years I was on 6 month dets ranging from above the artic circle to hot and humid hell. I went through boring times while on crew rest and actually wanted to fly more to make the time pass. One thing I did was find a hobby that related to the deployment area. When in Italy, I did some diving and Grand Prix races. Two dets to Iceland were in the winter and not fun outdoors. Some trips to Norway(on business) were good but very, very cold! I cannot figure out how those cute Norweigian girls could wear a mini skirt in those conditions! Japan had a lot to offer and Okinawa was interesting in the back country. Taiwan is stunning and great shopping. Korea was also good for shopping. Then there was the Phillipines. I will not discuss that on a public forum ;) For those that were there in the '70s, you know what I mean.
Anyway, I tried to make lemonade from the lemons. All countries have something to offer, it's just finding the right person to hook you in. Many of the locals that work on the base and speak good english can be a great resource for finding good places to go. Still, being away from the family sucks.

Everybody knows that locals are the best GPS...so it's not knowing where to go but the lack of opportunities to go...it's hard to be the worker bee sometimes...and since you were an aircrew, you had more opportunities than regular hard working personnel...so please don't look down on people...and one more thing...this is not the old military...things have changed...we have less people and more work than one person can handle....

I visit Antelop Canyon last week. The photos are from the upper Antelope Canyon. It's truly a special place for photography. I will go there again next summer. :-)
I was told by the guide the best time to visit is mid-summer. You will get a chance to capture the beam of lights shining down the canyon walls.
Make sure to bring a tripod and wide angle lens. You will enjoy it! :D
Absolutely wonderful shot. Also all the shots in the gallery.
I have a trip planned there in January. When were these shots taken? Recently?

Yes the whole of Canada is stunning, but Lake Louise is particularly beautiful! I was initially disappointed that I didn't get the perfect blue sky shot, but looking back it brought out the colours in the water. We have already started planning our next trip back!

You just have to remove the plastic piece from the back of the 10-22mm lens and keep the lens set at 11mm or higher to avoid having the mirror hit the back of the lens.

Great shots James. I'm thinking of grabbing a 1D-series camera and doing this to my 10-22; at what FL does vignetting start to occur? Also I'd be a bit paranoid when using it.. incase I accidentally zoom out to 10mm and it hits the mirror.

The vignetting is gone by 11mm, you can see it in the viewfinder, which helps prevent setting the lens at 10mm and having the mirror hit the back of the lens.
I finally found a spot where the lens is not quite at 11mm and the mirror doesn't hit the back of the lens:

How often do you all use this lens without a tripod for your daytime landscape photos? What minimum aperture/minimum shutter speeds do you think are needed to produce a crisp, sharp handheld photo?
I know I should be using a tripod, but sometimes I just don't have one when a good landscape opportunity comes up. And when I think I've captured a great shot, it looks a bit soft when I process it in LR. And I'm pretty sure it because of slight handshake from choosing a shutter speed a bit too slow.
Anyone have similar experiences?
Thanks.

There's no reason why any shake should show up at 1/125, as long as you are careful to hold still. I know the "1 over focal length" rule is often quoted, but in my view that's still not enough for critical sharpness. Be aware though that ultrawides can often seem less sharp, just because the details in an image are very small.

Thanks for the reply. I had a feeling it was handshake since I shot at like 1/60 and slower for a few shots I was disappointed with.

Does this sharpness @ f/4.5 seem ok to you guys? I'm just a bit surprised that there is such a drastic change in the trees in the background in the right half of the photo. The tree behind the car is fairly sharp, but the tree to the right is pretty blurry in comparison. The light was crappy since the sun was going down and it was also covered by buildings behind me when taking the photo, so light wasn't optimal. I'm hoping that this is due to camera shake, but the shutter was at 1/125, which I think is fast enough. I should've taken more pictures at a lower aperture, but everything looked ok in the LCD--yes, amateur move. The car is pretty razor sharp as I focused on the driver's side headlight/corner light, but I'm just surprised at how blurry the tree is.
Does this look normal to you guys? Hope my lens is ok.

Thanks Colin...I've read that as well...just never noticed how much of a drop off there was until now...do you think if I stopped down to lets say f/8 there would be a noticeable difference in the trees to the right? Or do you think the main root of my problem was hand shake, meaning a tripod would have probably solved much of this?
Thanks.

Jubu, I don't think hand shake was a factor, as image blur caused by a low shutter speed would affect the entire image. Stopping down should definitely help. Personally, my 10-22 is my landscape lens, and I rarely shoot it with an aperture larger than f/5.6. Most copies of the 10-22 appear to be rather robust when stopped down! Give it a shot and see how yours go..

Gotcha...thanks for all your replies...I'll have to take it out this weekend and do some testing at multiple apertures from f/4.5 all the way to f/16.
Let you know how it goes. :)
EDIT: Here's another picture I just found of a landscape I took with the CPL on...perhaps it's the subject distance that caused the blurriness in the car pic? Because this pic below is @ f/5 + 10mm and it doesn't appear so distorted.
UPDATE: I've since trashed the CPL in favor of a B+W Protective UV and no more blur...the CPL was the cause. Everyone be careful with your CPLs! :)

While an UWA is good for rooms, I'm not sure it'll give you 'a feel for the actual size of the room'. It can often make spaces look bigger than they really are because of the exagerrated perspective effect - but that's why estate agents (realtors I think you call them) love them!

Well, I have been following this thread for about 6 months. I traveled to Europe in July and my first stop was Switzerland so I needed a lens to take pictures of the Alps. I just finished taking some classes at the local community college that were EXTREMELY beneficial and found this thread looking for an ultra-wide angle. I bought it back in June and it traveled all over Europe with me. And I must admin, I use it more that my other lenses. I love it. But I decided it was time to post a picture. I have been a voyeur for a little too long. So here is my contribution....

Awesome pictures! I just came back from Maui a week ago. I used my EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS primarily. This might make me get a 10-22 F3.5.

from the Sacramento Auto Show last weekend. The GM building was lit with Mercury Vapor and Sodium lights. I had to go into live view and select the Kelvin manually. 2600 seemed the best for the Sodium. This was my first attempt at Sodium compensation with the manual K adjustment.

Speaking of Hawaii, have you been to Kauai?
Not yet, Maui is the only place I've been other then a brief stop in Kona.

I've been once and am returning at month's end, so I'll be packing heavy. Also been to the other big three. So many photo-ops, so little time...

I like the sharpness of this lens.
I can't help but stop at this image every time I return to this thread on a new post. What a great shot along with editing..!!
