Taken with 10-22mm and 1D mark3. I like the combo. I've never had this much latitude regarding PP. And they go dirt cheap. Maybe a 7D is better, but I like this camera. Got it today :)

Question... how do you get a EF-S lens on a 1d mk 3 i thought they only took EF lens

All EF-S lenses can be modded to work on APS-H or FF cameras. It's not actually that hard, mainly involves removing the rubber ring at the rear. Of course, this is not generally advised since you'd have to watch out for the rear element hitting the mirror at wider focal lengths. As far as I know, anything wider than 11mm on the 10-22 will result in a collision with the Mark III's mirror.

Like Collin85 wrote, very easy and quick. Just stay away from 10mm and it's okay.

My entire "In the Railyard" series was published in LensWork Magazine about a year ago. Much of it was taken using a 10-22 EF-S. I eventually sold it to replace it with a 12-24 Sig after the 5D MkII came out. The 10-22 was a wonderful optic. Sometimes I miss it.

I really like high impact, wide images. I didn't shoot this one (posted below), but I include it here for reference. If you are using IE, click the image so that it doesn't autoshrink the image from its fullness. Applogies to those with low pixel count monitors!

Really! I did not know that. My appologies. I wonder what the thought process behind that is. I could understand it if file size were an issue and the forum software was hosting/serving the images, but that is not the case for 99% of the images uploaded to this forum, where we are hosting them externally and just linking them in. Maybe it's time to polish up the rules a bit, to reflect today's monitor sizes. Heck, even SmugMug has finally gone Wide :-)

Dig around on here and you will find plenty of threads on this choice. I went with the 10-22mm because I like the larger range, how it felt on my camera, decent MFD and the deal I got with bing cashback. The price was really the only thing keeping me from getting one earlier. I really wanted a UWA that would go as wide as 10.

I did consider the Tokina 11-16mm (as well as both Sigma 10-20mm's). Some say the Tokina is sharper (I think this is debatable) and it is certainly faster with the constant f/2.8 (but do you really need that with a UWA?). The Tokina can be really hard to find in stock as well.

Good luck with your purchase. I think both are great UWAs for crops.

You just need the right plug-ins for your browser, that scales the photos to fit your monitor, or (blech) maybe even use IE (I can't belive I just typed that!). My iPhone doesn't care, it just fits magically.

some things which will make the photo a lot better are for example:
ND gradual filters,
ND grey filter
ND1000 is a very nice filter.
Cokin is a good option for the gradual filters.

I am going to get some ND filters. I really like some of the extreme ND w/ long daytime exposure shots I've seen. I'm just getting my feet wet with digital photography, but use to work with filters in the film based days. I really miss shooting IR and high contrast (tech-pan) as well as with different filters I had for my AE-1.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into those. Any particular filter to bring out some higher contrast?

Embedded images still need to be loaded. Generally speaking, it's considered bad netiquette to post images that are almost 500k in size. ;)

The thought process behind it is that:
a) some people still use dial-up. 1024px images are big enough for them already.
b) some people use a smaller laptop or so. My 12" Powerbook is 1024 px wide for instance.

If you want to post a ginormous image, feel free to link to it. ;)

I just picked this lens up tonight and I have a question. I wanted to see if anyone had a little play in the lens. For example, if you hold the lens by the zoom ring and behind the focus ring in the other hand and GENTLY "bend" as if you were trying to break it in half, is it kind of wobbly/loose?

jwcdds
10th of December 2009 (Thu), 01:54
I only had a brief 3 hour time to play with a loaner 10-22 lens from Canon. However, I do not recall any "play" or "bend" at all when I was using it. Felt rather solid for an EF-S lens.

Goincarcrazy
10th of December 2009 (Thu), 08:28
It must just be the way the "bottom cup" is clipped onto the main body of the lens. It's pretty darn solid, only about a millimeter of play in one direction only, so I guess that's good enough for me.

I believe you can "calibrate" (I hope I spell it the right way) your lens? maybe that is an option? And you have to do everything manual to get the best results. For example: shooting RAW, use the sharpness, saturation option IN the camera (for example: sharpness, +4 etc.), don't photograph wide open, try also at f/8 etc.
You probably already do those things, but if you don't.. try it, i'm pretty sure it will help.

I shoot RAW so using those settings doesn't effect the photo (those are only if you shoot JPEG IIRC). I've microadjusted my lens which has helped a bit, and I tend to use Av mode with most shots around f/8 or so.

It's been a while since I've really used the lens so I may just need to get out and use it more now that I know some better PP techniques.

It's doable. Just need to get as close to the subject as possible, near minimum focal distance. The closer you can get, the more OOF the background will be.

this shot was taken really close!, about 10 cm. It was very difficult to make this shot because there was a lot of wind which made the flower often go out of focus (I hope my english will be correct :))

I do have another somewhat strange question concerning this lens. Does anyone know how to take it apart? I won't be attempting this unless I have step by step instructions, but I thought I'd ask just in case. It'll prolly go into Canon for repair, seeing as this lens seems to be somewhat of a cheap one to get fixed.

This lens was waiting for me when I got home from work this evening, and I've been duly impressed with some of the shots I've seen on this thread; can't wait to use it.

Question regarding a GND filter (for general landscape shots): I'm kind of short on research time, because I'd like to order one before Christmas, so I'm soliciting opinions about which single GND I might be best off with.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas in advance.

I think the best option will be the 2 stop (ND4) gradual grey filter. Not too "heavy" in darkness, will give a nice dramatic effect to your clouds.
The best option is to take one from Cokin, the Z-system. You could also get the P-system, but then you will have vignetting from 10-12mm. With the Z-system you won't have any vignetting at all. Unfortunately the Z-system is more expensive than the P-system.

For anyone looking for a GND set-up for their 10-22, 2filter.com has a combination of Z Pro holder, 77mm ring, and Hitech GND filter for $146 including shipping http://www.2filter.com/prices/Hitech_Z_package.html

I just pulled the trigger about 5 minutes ago (got the ND 0.6 soft, 2-stop).

Thanks! And yes, it's Savannah Georgia. I live about 2 hours away so its not a bad drive really. Beautiful city and if you go I recoment at least 3 days to see things. If it's your first time, I recommend taking a trolley tour to get the lay of the land and a bit of history then you can go walk around and find the POI's. The lighthouse is about 15 miles to the east of Savannah over at Tybee Island which offers its own beachy atmosphere.

The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle, so the 10-22 is considerably wider (at its widest) than the 17-40.

the 10-22 is EF-S so it can only be used on APS-C bodies. Applying the crop factor the 10-22 is equivalent to a 16-35 on Fullframe. the 17-40 is a fullframe lens, if you use in on a crop body it becomes a 27-64.

I'm sure it snowed much more when I was a kid. So this year it has been great with all the snow we have had. Here is one of my last photos from my 450D as I have just sold it.

hey guys great shots here, makes me want to go out and shoot right away. Question on Circular polarizers. Which one? B&W Slim 77mm CPL, which is less than $100. B&W Kaesemann SLIM which is like $200 (which is close to a new lens or tripod for me). HoyaPro1/Kenko Zeta also about $100.

EDIT: I guess add another to the mix, looking at maxsaver there is a B&W Slim MRC as well close in price to the kaesemann one. I guess the question is, can my cheap arse get away with the $100 filters or should I shell out the dough?

Actually the EF-S 10-22 lens can be VERY EASILY modified to work on 1D series camera bodies! (APS-H or 1.3x).

"
The lens is easily modified to allow use on 1.3x crop EF-Mount bodies such as the 1D Mk III by removing the snap-in rear plastic piece."

It's usable from about 12mm (perhaps even as low as 11 mm) up to 22mm.

In fact a few photographers on this board have posted several images in the EF-S 10-22mm lens sample thread. With EXCELLENT results!

A couple of links describing the procedure:

Yep. I use both my 10-22 and 17-55 on full-frame. On the 5D, the rear mirror swipes the rear element below 11.5mm. On the 1D III, apparently it's around 12mm (which is a tiny bit odd given that it has a smaller mirror). The 17-55 is a real gem on FF, given that it's roughly a (FF-equiv) 32-88 f/2.8 IS lens (post-cropping & post-mirror-bash-considerations).

As mentioned, the modification is very easy. It takes me literally 3 seconds and I use my index finger to pull out the EF-S attachment.

You can even buy the little black plastic pieces that SNAP into the back of the lens to cover up the exposed insides of the lens. (if one chooses to do so.)

Ones from the Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 lens, and the EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 zoom lens seem to fit perfectly. They probably aren't very expensive.

I'm not sure what the "official" name of those parts are, but I'm sure Canon service/parts dept. could tell you.

Been doing some construction around the place instead of photography. First photo in a few weeks... a new snow/rain shelter for the critters.
