I debated whether to get the Sigma or Canon... From what I've read, Canon shows an advantage in IQ but at a big jump in price compared to the Sigma.

In short, since it's still affordable at $600, I went for the Canon and got done worrying or thinking about it.

Highly recommended!

If I go get a 5D in the future, my 10-22 can still be used with my 30D. (I'm not the type that sell camera bodies when I upgrade, I just keep them.)

I think the 10-22mm uses "L" glass but didn't get the "L" moniker and RED Stripe because it's an EFS.

You need one of the thin ones if you want to avoid vignetting at 10mm. My cheap standard thickness Jessops CP vignettes at 10-12. My big Lee 105mm CP on a wide-angle Lee adapter is OK unless I want an ND grad as well - then it vignettes at 10-11mm.

Using polarisers at these wide wide angles leads to some weird skies. Some parts of the sky are much darker than others due to the large range of angles that the scene is to the sun. This issue has been raised in these forums before - see this (one of my earlier threads) for details if interested: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=165602

Does that really apply to a camera with a 1.6 crop factor? I've used step-down rings to use small filters on my 17-40 at 17mm with no vignetting. I haven't tried that with my 10-22, though. Since that lens' rear element is closer to the sensor, maybe it's different. I should experiment...

I have a regular ol' Hoya multi-coated CPL filter on my 10-22 lens. No vignetting with that, and I don't personally care for the ultra thin ones. The lens cap won't attach to those, and that just bugs me.

My cheapo CP (Jessops) is 8mm thick and causes vignetting at 10-12mm with this lens on a 350D. Maybe your CP is just a bit thinner.

The Hoya Pro1 slim type do have filter threads. I use my Canon 77mm lens cap on them all the time when in use. B+W don't have the front threads.

It just depends on the lighting situation at the time. I find the polarizer often more usable than the Grad ND filter setup. If you not careful certain areas in you frame will render too dark with the GND.

A regular ND is solid in color depending on the strength, where as the Grad ND is split - 1/2 dark & 1/2 clear.

so thats mean i will use C-polarizer more, i think Europe that time when i will travel will be cloudy and rainy sometimes, so is that C-polarizer important? and what about my regular ND, what i can do with it?

Tsmith
17th of October 2006 (Tue), 12:43
The Polarizer won't be of much use on cloudy overcast days _ if thats the case the GND could prove very useful.

The regular ND (solid color) won't be of much use unless your trying to slow down your shutter speed to blur motion as in a waterfall.

Tareq
17th of October 2006 (Tue), 13:12
OH no, i don't have time to order GND now, it is not available here in my area, too bad.
I will take both of them and try to use them both sometimes and see whats the difference.
I think with cloudy weather C-PL will be so difficult to shoot with as the photos will be darker and even focus is difficult, i hope i can get good enough photos, it will be my first serious try in photography, so i don't want to waste time shooting crappy photos.

Tareq
17th of October 2006 (Tue), 13:14
if i can buy GND from Europe somewhere then i wish someone can tell me the stores there t buy (I will go to Paris, Geneva, and Munich) so then i can use it there. What you will do if you were in my place?

Just returned from Mexico on business, my 10-22 was waiting all week :(
But I'm back and took just some quick snaps about the house, WIDE is the word :)

Here is a shot of our kitchen, please don't mind the dirty dishes and don't tell the wife
I posted this shot...or I'll get shot!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/GaryWGraley/EOS%2020D/10-22mm/kitchen_10mm.jpg

This is a wide shot taken from about 8' away, and with minimum distortion, if I had
the proper software I could probaly straighten out the right side a tad but, otherwise
you get the idea of the shot,

First blush of this lens, like it so far, it will take some time to master how to use it
took a very closeup of my daughter, she was less than thrilled :) made me delete that
one asap!

Colour and speed are nice, can't wait to put it to more use soon!

I took tons of interior shots like that when I got mine. As long as you keep the camera horizontal it's fine!

I also took some interiors of my wife's parents' house in Northern Scotland which is for sale. The estate agent said they were much better than her shots and put them in the schedule.

It's tough to not take pictures everywhere :) Took it to work, as I usually do and shot
some things there, what's nice about UWA lenses are you get to see things that from
a distance you'd not see normally, which is pretty cool, here is a shot inside our medical
cabinet at work shot quite close and not too much distortion, hand held as well;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/GaryWGraley/EOS%2020D/10-22mm/IMG_0656.jpg

Really liking the lens, took my hood off the 17-40 and ordered a new hood for the 17-40
that should work better too, the hood that's for the 17-55 looks to be a good choice for
the 17-40 on a crop sensor body so I hope that's how it goes, ordered that tonight.

It isn't a landscape, but I was aiming down for this shot. I couldn't believe how close I had to get for it! I was practically touching the bird with the front element of the lens! I was also pretty surprised it let me get so close...

couple more, shows more area when shot up close than you'd see from a similar

It's the Three Sisters, Blue Mountains. The distance has the effect of curvature and those mountains weren't level. It might be a bit off still but it's okay for now, I took them yesterday. The mountains on the right are closer so they block the horizon behind them.

I don't know if my my advice is worth much (Im a complete noob to photography) but perhaps that is actually a good selling point for this lens. I bought it on a lark (first lense after the 350D kit) and I have used it for everything:) The first two pics I took in my yard for a Mountain Bike forum I frequent, and the other 2 were taken through my tinted hotel window on a riding to trip to Vancouver (it was rainy and dark). All are just handheld point and click (auto everything), and were cropped in iPhoto. I really love the lens, worth every cent!

You're quite new here. Can I offer a bit of advice about image post sizes? :) Although there are no rules about linked images, most members here downsize to around 800 pixels on the longest size and compress the jpeg to about 200kB or less, maybe with a link to a larger version if they want critique. These ones of yours are 400-800kB and took quite a while to download even with my broadband.

Thanks for the correction, Jon. The main point I wanted to make was to encourage a bit more compression to keep download times reasonable. Another option I quite like is to include a link to a larger version.

I actually rented the 10-22 for this trip to the Titan Missile Museum www.titanmissilemuseum.org (http://www.titanmissilemuseum.org). Cost 25 bucks to p/u Fri after 3pm and d/o Mon before 11am from Samy's here in L.A. Good alternative to buying a lens if you have a one-time specific use for it, like this 6-hour top-to-bottom tour of the silo. Here's another shot from the same trip. 10mm, f3.5 640iso on the 30D. Not processed or cropped.

The tour took us from outside the blast doors on the surface to way down underneath the rocket as far down there as you can see. They do that tour only every other month or so. Totally fascinating trip for space geeks.
