X2! Great job one these. Lighting is perfect! Here are 2 people shots at the wide end and a crappy landscape. Haven't had a chance to do any real landscape shots yet yet. First one is me, notice how I rep the forum! Gotta have the strap in view.

I don't have a grad filter so if I wanted to have the colour in the sky I'd have to expose for the sky as I was facing the sun which just went over the horizon. This will silhouette the foreground, this is what happened to me so I had to bring back the shadows (you can't do it the other way around)

Ill throw anudder one in here. Taken at the memorial where there were at least 5 people with dslr's, heres two of them. The older gentleman had a olympas on a slik setup, the guy sitting down was using a Pentax, I, of course was using a Canon w/ ef-s 10-22mm.

They both were shooting a duck and her ducklings. Not sure if you can see them.

Nice, looks like you might have used lens correction did you? You can't tell by the picture, I was asking for the slight angle of the shot, the shed is square.

I like photos better corrected than not square.

This lens is big fun! I was lucky enough to recently add this to my arsenal. I've never worked with a lens with such a UWA. I was expecting poor corner sharpness, but to my surprise it's not so bad! I look forward to working a lot with this lens in the future!

Can you please explain what you mean by "watch the horizon"? I know you are referring to the composition but is it the angle of the horizon or the vertical placement of it in the shot?

Pete-eos
19th of May 2007 (Sat), 06:37
Do believe he means the wonky horizon, sadly it can't be fixed in PP, I either lose part of the boat or to much sky to try and straighten which is a shame :(

But thanks for the comments :)

Not for the tests, been using a Coking Grad constatly since I got it doing landscape shots. It really kills the quality sometimes, need to buy a Hitech grad set when I got the spare money.

I print from https://www.photobox.co.uk/ usually but I was in a shop getting some 6x4's done and couldn't resist. I've not noticed any loss in quality printing that size... :)

I actually rented the 10-22 for this trip to the Titan Missile Museum www.titanmissilemuseum.org (http://www.titanmissilemuseum.org). Cost 25 bucks to p/u Fri after 3pm and d/o Mon before 11am from Samy's here in L.A. Good alternative to buying a lens if you have a one-time specific use for it, like this 6-hour top-to-bottom tour of the silo. Here's another shot from the same trip. 10mm, f3.5 640iso on the 30D. Not processed or cropped.

The tour took us from outside the blast doors on the surface to way down underneath the rocket as far down there as you can see. They do that tour only every other month or so. Totally fascinating trip for space geeks.

Great picture. I spent the first 8 years of my Air Force career in a Titan II Missile silo in Arkansas during the 80's. I was a launch crew member;brings back a lot of memories.

This moring ,something very unusual happened to me , ,my EF-S10-22 broke , I did not use it rough.

I I went to the store where I bought it and asked exchange , but they did not have the Canon, so I may get the Sigma instead .

Maybe , Canon QC is even worse than that of Sigma.

If I can , I will just wait 2 more weeks to get new copy of this could be a great lens , but I need to leave here tomorrow to China , before that I need an UWA.

Oh well, give the Sigma a try.

Take care , and happy shooting, for me happy editing , I love photoshop more than my cameras..

Nice shot.
It is possible with sigma 10-20 or with 16-35L on FF bodies.

@TMR Design and SumoComputers:
Did you correct the distortion in those pictures or did you shoot it at 22mm?

TMR Design
8th of June 2007 (Fri), 10:56
Hi Julia,

The really cool thing about this lens is that unless there are straight vertical lines, as in buildings, I don't see or correct for any distortion. both those images were at 10mm and I rarely, if ever move off the wide end of the lens and never have a problem. I would be fine if this lens were a 10mm prime.

Does anybody know if the Tokina 12-24 has distortion at the wide end since it's not quite as wide as the Canon or Sigma?

wimg

Does anybody know if the Tokina 12-24 has distortion at the wide end since it's not quite as wide as the Canon or Sigma?
The Toki has about 1.4% barrel distortion at th wide end, the Canon about 1.25%, and the Sigma about 2-3% at the outer edges, less in the center, average 0.6% - see photozone.de.

Essentially, the Canon scores best at low distortion figures.

Kind regards, Wim

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that the 10-22 was the only lens capable of that.

Since I have a crop body, and the 10-22 was the widest lens in my bag...well you get the point.

The other point is that something like a 17-40 would not quite have worked. But I actually posted the wrong pic. The one I had in mind was this one, shot a 10mm.

Anyhow, crop camera users definitely have a limited selection because we really need 10mm where a FF user can select 16 or 17mm.

But with no straight lines, it is hard to see any distortion, although it is there.

I recently sold mine (an easy thing to do as they are in great demand) but don't worry, I'm not giving up wide angle photography - I now have a 16-35 f2.8 Mk II L to go with my new 5D! :D

On a lot of the shots I didn't notice any barrel distortion. Has everyone been correcting for it in software, or would you just notice the distortion more on vertical lines. In some shots the horizon line has a bit of a curve, but not too bad for such a wide angle.

I don't know but if you move the camera with this lens you can see some distortion and sometimes you don't see it, so it depends on some factors maybe, worth a try and even with distortion i still love this lens.

Oh, my God, I just tried to get a used 10-22 and it wasn't possible. So, un-wisely I settled for the Sigma 10-20mm. After a bunch of test shots in the street I had to check the ISO on my camera. The Sigma showed a lot of noise and chromatic abberation on the shots.

I'll be taking it in to Henry's to upgrade to the 10-22mm. Man, this was the first time that I thought to try Sigma and the quality was no where worth the difference in price.

I feel like a sucker. I have a Tamron 2X converter for Canon and it worked well with my 74-300mm lens, but that lens was always a little soft, so I never noticed anything. I bought the 100-400L and I have not touched the 75-300mm since. My 17-85mm IS gives better performance than the 75-300mm.

There are definitely two classes of lenses with Canon.......well maybe three. There are the L-series, the ones that should be L's but just don't have the red-ring and price tag, and then the others.

Man, it sucks to learn this way.

This lens should have been designated as L , I think this lens has the least amount of barrel distortion at 17mm in Canon land.

This lens is my walk around lens and I am getting rid of these 17-xx lenses due to their significantly more pronounced distortion at 17mm than the 10-22.

If you are shooting landscapes , you may not see the serious distortion of the 17-85 , 55, 17-50 Tamron and 40L , though when I shoot cityscapes and street photos , I clearly nortice that with these 17-xx lenses, I need more PP than with the 10-22.

Also , all of these 17-xx( , even the overly raved 17-55 IS) have serious flare issue that my 10-22 never has.

What a great lens it is , at the moderate price , it is almost perfect.

I think when the 17-85IS or 24-105L IS is combined with this lens their serious barrel distortion problem will be automatically solved, and for 17-85IS users, it is more practical and useful to add the 10-22 than the 17-55IS or the Tamron equivalent unless you really need the constant f2.8.

I found f2.8 is not fast enough in door(need my 85 f1.8 or 5051.4) , and out door , I need more DOF than silly f2.8 ever created, the 17-55IS is a good lens but not great IMHO, boring (short and not wide enough).

Its serious flare issue is very bad , especially in South East Asia.

I can not use it at all out side here in Bangkok even with the hood.

So it is not selling well in Asia, but the 10-22 and 24 105L are Canon's best selling lenses here.

Many say the 24 -xxx is not wide enough , sure is not , but then the 17-55 long enough for you ?

My point is every body is different and you need to choose something right to your own needs not just because being raved at FM or Photozone.de

Well, I sepnt alot of money on some useless lenses for my needs , to learn this never buy a lens you will not use regardless of these reviews or rating for it .

I use the Canon hood that came of my 17-40 f/4L (EW-83E Lens Hood) but have seen reports the the hood for the new Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II will work, not 100% sure on that though. (will not work as the new 16-35 f/2.8 L II has an 82mm diameter) The Canon hood saved my lens & 30D a few weeks back during a nasty fall in a rock filled creek.
