First day of shooting with the Canon EF-S 10-22. A few things I have noticed in comparison to the Tokina 11-16:

The Canon:
- has a more usable range (obviously)
- the colour on the Canon is a bit better
- distortion is better on the Canon
- a little less chromatic abberation aka fringing

On the negative side, it does not appear to be as sharp. I will do some more intense side by side comparisons at some point before I decide which is to stay and which is to go but so far it looks like the Canon is the keeper for me as it's a bit more versatile.

Edit: Now I'm wondering if it really matters whether the exposure accurately reflects the scene or meets the exposure guidelines of having a full tonal range. Especially with snow. Though there is white snow in that frame where the light was brighter.

OK, sorry, I guess I'd assumed the newbie error of letting the camera choose the exposure, as often happens in snowy scenes. It's an interesting question, and I must admit I myself would tend towards capturing the image as I saw it, even though it might look underexposed.

Yeah it's a tough spot. The photojournalistic side of me wants to say "record it as it is" as much as possible in camera while the aesthetic side of me wants to make an image look good even if that means embellishment that compromises that photojournalistic integrity. What complicates matters is that I did look at a brighter exposure of this image and while it looked good I dismissed it because of a desire to be accurate to the scene. And yet, I did lighten certain areas of the image for aesthetic purposes (the floating blocks of ice in the water were not that white as they had no snow on them). It's hypocritical to some random arbitrar of photo accuracy of my own creation I guess. Then I post the image and the subjectiveness of the exposure becomes public. How are viewers to know how dark and grey it was? Does it matter? Should snow always be white? Particularly in B&W? Have I spent so long in academia that I ask questions such as these habitually? :oops:

Ultimately the pictures are for me and not a client so as long as they please me they are successful but I do not want that to be a licence to be lazy or not train my eye to be better. Yet, apparently the last statement wasn't the last, the picture is the ultimate statement of what I want to say. I can't hang around for each viewer and let them know that it was "dark"...

Yeah, I know. But I've also read that the 1/fl rule starts to fall apart when you get down below 20mm or so. I've even read articles that claim you simply cannot get a really crisp shot at 1/20 or slower without IS regardless of FL. Not sure I believe that. That's why I was asking James if used a tripod on this one.

I just shot a few in the house at 1/20 -10mm on my T2i(16mm)..came out sharp. As for James' shot.. probably a tripod, but he can answer. ;)

Thanks!! I focused on the trees to the left side and used f22 to try and get as much in focus as possible. The image is a 3 shot HDR. Not used to how wide this lens is yet and how close it can focus ... after the fact I noticed I got a shadow of the camera on the rock :(
