Not a flashy pic (wasn't supposed to be) but an illustration of just how wide the 10-22 is.

question: this was on a 1.6 crop body yes?

it shows 10mm so yes.

it shows 10mm so yes.

A 10-22 on a 1.6 crop would be 16. But considering the fact that the canon 10-22 will not work a a full frame because it is an ef-s lens, unless modified to a EF, yes this is on a 1.6crop.

well there is also the 1.3 crop body to consider... which would obviously affect the FOV

If so how many different exposure shots did you take?

Tareq
15th of November 2007 (Thu), 01:59
Not always we have to take many shots to have one shot well exposed, i saw many nice shots where the sky is not so overexposure and the foreground is not underexposed and it is only 1 shot taken and no merging or so.

mdrtoys

It's not HDR - just a single shot, all the PP was done in lightroom. I was going for a "Painted Look" A friend of mine (and my wife) went to Rice University and he wanted a specific type of shot. The one he wanted had a lot of cobbelstone in it so I cropped off the bottom for my own uses.

I'm really happy with how the picture worked out....I'm having it printed on a canvas to give it an even more "painted" feel.

And thanks for the comments, it really means a lot - picture was taken with a 40D

Did you take the shot with the 5d or 40d? I thought the EF-s lenses don't work on the 5d I see the black edges that why i ask. On a 1.6 crop mine does not show and black edges.

My guess is there was a filter on the lens (with the lens on a crop body).

My guess is there was a filter on the lens.

if that was a 5d with an ef-s lens attached (the sigma ones do fit) you would see a large thick black border all the way around and a little postage-stamp photo in the middle of it... i've seen one

full frame has a huge field of view compared to 1.6 and the ef-s lenses simply don't focus any light into that extra area, so it stays black

im gonna guess either filter or 3rd-party lens hood

mdrtoys

It had a Circular Polarizer on it to enhance a couple feature of the shot - the hood was a bonafide canon hood - that's why it has a vignetting....without the filter it would have had clean edges.

oh ok
i wondered about the filter cos my cpl isnt visible on its own, but if i stack it over the uv it gets in the way

I'm a little bit confused by this as I use a Hoya CPL and the EW-83E Lens Hood without any vignetting -

I am not sure if that vignetting is more clear with f11 or above, as in landscape i always use f16-f22 [last time yesterday i was using f8-f16 because i didn't use a tripod for a reason].

Hmmm..I have to say I've been to many of these mountain areas, and the 10-22 at 10mm does a great job of shrinking the mountains, making them far less dramatic and interesting. Doesn't look at all what it's like to be there. I think it works great for urban/car/beach stuff though.

Beauty of a shot, Pete-eos.

I was only commenting on the location - Pete-eos took the shot (unless you were referring all the way back to my amphitheatre shot!).

I think you've identified a problem that many people have with ultrawides - the desire to 'get it all in', which as you say can minimise the impact of elements within the shot. To get good effects, you have to learn the lens and use it with care. I agree that for general landscape use it is often TOO wide, but like any specialist lens, it has its place.

I agree with what you are saying. I'm usually more impressed with car, building or beach shots with that lens, but not really any other nature shots. A mountain should always feel like a mountain IMHO ;)

This little lens is outstanding. The colours are outstanding and the distorted images are amazing, even in low light, hand held with no flash. I believe it would be an L except for the fact that it is EF-S and not EF series. Here's a few recent photos:

Ahh...I knew something like this would happen. I bought from Amazon at 639, and I also bought the Canon hood with it. With overnight shipping (need it for a photoshoot in 2 days) it came to ~690.

I've heard about Amazon doing a price match thing if it goes down in price with a similar vendor such as B&H. I might inquire about that.

I decided to bring up these images and do some quick pp -- the skylines were shot at quite a distance (haze) from a moving boat in a steady breeze, so working on contrast/sharpening/saturation values for the skyline helped a lot:)! On the third, I did no distortion correction because I figured it would be educational to realize that this lens does have plenty of distortion when wide. But it's sharp and delivers good overall IQ, in my opinion.

Oh, and the skyline shots are kind of boring. I'm just showing the scope of the lens from wide to narrow, on a beautiful summer day approaching Seattle -- the best of days!

I am in serious trouble. I just was looking at the 17-55 F2.8 thread earlier in the week and now it is sitting at home waiting for me to get off work. Now I have this feeling like it is happing all over again. The B&H code really makes me want to buy it, but I am not sure if I could still buy Christmas for anyone else this year, lol. Maybe my gift to everyone this year is that I will buy all my own gifts so they don't have to buy me anything and give them pictures in return...

That is correct, the Circular Polarizer is a must have on these kinda conditions as it really boosts the overall saturation and contrast in the colors.

wow.. that's great some great DOF and composition! i must also say this is by far the best 10-22 photo i've seen!

but you mentioned u used a cir. polarizer. i read somewhere that you had to turn the front filter to a certain point depending on what you are shooting to let in enough light, or am i missing something here? i have a CP on my G6 and when i shoot landscape, i can turn it all day long and the photos will still be the same. maybe i'm going coo-coo for coco puffs...

also,"silly question here", but do you use whitbal when you shoot your landscape?

btw, Toney.. you have an amazing PBase gallery, especially the one for the 10-22!!

Tsmith
8th of December 2007 (Sat), 01:54
thanks again on all accounts _ that particular shot i used no filters but do use a Cir PL in sunlit conditions quite often. Its really easy just rotating to the amount of polarization desired and too you don't won't to over darken those blue skies so backing off while looking to the viewfinder works to see the effect. A 90 degree angle to the sun is best.

Since I shot 100% in RAW the WB stays set to Auto most of the time. If needed a use a WhiBal card I have in the backpack.

I hate you guys. I'm pulling the trigger at $609 from BH ;)

one question. If i get the hoya multi-coated uv filter which is 5mm thick, will I see any vignetting? (Rebel XT)

and do you think a CPL is necessary for landscapes? I've heard that cpl's sometimes create weird gradients in the skies since it's so wide?

I wouldn't say a polariser is NECESSARY for landscapes, though they often can be useful. However, you're right that on very wideangle lenses they can be counterproductive if a large expanse of sky is included. This is because different parts of the sky are polarised to different degrees (reaching a maximum at points 90 degrees to the direction of the sun), and the polariser will show that by darkening the blue sky by an amount proportional to the degree of polarisation.

In practice what you can get is a blue sky with a dark band in it, when the original scene had a uniform blue sky. The only way around this is to not use the polariser - you can always dodge the sky in photoshop, or combine two images exposed separately for the foreground and the sky.

The CPL is very handy to have for landscape work. Its the one filter to have in your bag but you indeed want a high quality multicoated type.

They can produce "weird gradients" but often times that can be taken care of by not using the filter at full polarization. I use my Hoya Digital Pro1 CPL quite a lot when outdoors.
