Not the usual view you'd expect from an UWA lens... but I thought it was pretty cool.

I just got mine today from Adorama ..... there is a $50 rebate for a few more days. The link to B&H for $609 doesn't match the price that is listed when I check their web site .... it shows $639 so I don't know where the disconnect is.
Adorama has their brand of lens hood also ... much cheaper and looks the same as the canon hood.

The lens/hood/filter arrived a day earlier than expected but I'm in Boston until tomorrow so I haven't had a chance to try it out.

There's third party hoods on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/For-Canon-16-35-17-40-10-22-17-35-EW-83E-Lens-Hood-New_W0QQitemZ200197282552QQihZ010QQcategoryZ78999Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638 .m122) for a fraction of the price. They are functionally the same. Had no problems with mine.

6th of February 2008 (Wed), 18:59
i bought one of those ebay hoods... it was almost impossible to find the 'start' place for it and then when i finally did, it kept cross-threading when i tried to fit it.it was even hard to fit reversed for storage, like it was slightly not 'round' or something
it felt really brittle, like if i bumped it, it might split - and it was also fiddly to remove. so i sent it (and the 17-55 3rd party hood) back and got canon ones - the difference was immediately noticeable. the canon ones are also flock-lined to reduce reflection of the glare

don't know about the rest of the world but in Cape Town you'll see blue clouds due to reflection from the ocean.

When the sky goes black, you know you've overdone the polariser!
Don't know about that. I like the effect - a bit more unique than the washed out skies. Also, in that particular shot, the sun was behind me, which also explains how the skies came out evenly dark from left to right. When I shot with the same polarizing position and the sun was 90 degrees to my left, the effect was less prominent.
Here is an example: Shot the same time, just a different angle (sun is to the left) - same polarizing position on the lens as in the image above:

None. I tried my CPL on it, but I got very funky results because of the wide focal length. No filter at all works best for me.

I agree you need to be a bit careful with a CPL at the wide end but nearer 22mm, or if you are a little subtle in your effect it can still work well. But I admit I have ruined a few photos by having excessively deep blue sky on one half of the image at the 10mm end.

I just thought of a really cool idea to show how wide it is.
Someone (not me for sure) who knows how, should create on of those 360* world panoroamas, and then then post one of the shots at 10mm. It would be an accurate represtentation of how big its FOV is.
