Get this, and then get the 17-55 IS. Both should be L's in my opinion.

I'm trying to decide what my next purchase will be. I'm going to be shooting alot more automotive shots, interiors etc. It's between this and the 17-55. I've read the vignetting can be very noticeable with a high f-# and wide angle...is this true?

I see that you have a Tammy 28-75.... So perhaps 10-22 would be more useful for you! :)

The vignetting I have experienced in my shots with the 10-22 has actually been quite desireable.

In my opinion, vignetting on an ultra wide angle lens is not nessecarily a bad thing.

That looks great! I'm going to have to shoot high F-# too, probably not more than 11 or 13, but mostly above 8. I don't see any vig on F-13...This helps me out alot, especially since the 10-22 is cheaper!
What do you think though? Tokina 10-17 or Canon 10-22? I've seen great pics with the Tokina too...Hmmm...

I always wanted this lens and just recently i purchased it with no regrets.
Outstanding quality in the day and suprisingly also very good at night.
All 3 images below were just resized and the last one was coverted to monocrome on my 40d when i was shooting at night. can't wait to shoot some real scenary like cities at night. Highly recomended.

I love it's capacity to take pictures in low available light !!! You canno't imagine how dark was this scene (where my 24-105 failed, without flash of course). The 10-22 really "create" the light, it seems unrealistic. Do you have same experiences ? Why this effect ?
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8269/img3990bl4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Just to give you an idea, this picture was taken at the other hand of the upper shot. You can notice that the music band was playing in the darkest place of the church :

Bradkb, I got a 40D too and I'm a bit surprise on how your 400ISO seems very noisy !!!

Did you use another "special setting" ?

My copy won't leave any details of noise @400ISO. Look at my shots (on previous page) in the church, I was @1600ISO and there is no noise appearing on blacks

Even though this is off topic on this thread, I would try playing around with white balance. I've couple times seen similar situations on 40D's RAW images in BibblePro, that I use as RAW converter. With one white balance setting sky looks awful and with something else its smooth as silk.

Do you see the 'banding' or horizontal lines in the sky in these shots? Is that
"color banding"? I've heard about it in pictures, but is this what it looks like? My RAW images contain alot of that effect for some reason. Why is it there and how do you remove it?

iNfEk
10th of May 2008 (Sat), 15:12
well most of mine could be contributed to high ISO setting and noise. But a little noise could add personality to an image. I used an XTi to shoot that Image with a Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lens.

nope, not ef-s mount. but im sure they modded the lens to prevent it from hittign the mirror.

So how do you mod a lens to fit?

drPheta
19th of May 2008 (Mon), 17:44
remove the rubber rear piece (it just comes out with some prying), and keep the lens use between 12-22mm and you avoid hitting the lens with the mirror. On a 1D, that equates to just under 16mm FOV while utilizing Canon's sweet glass.

Nice shots Tareq, are those HDR?

Any filters used on those pictures?

Thank you very much
The first 2 yes, they are HDR, the last 2 not HDR.
what filters i used? hmmmmmm, i can't remember very well, but as long i saw the blue sky there in the mountains of Switzerland i used CPL, normal Hoya CPL cheap, it did the job anyway even i got vignetting and cropped the shot little from the corners, the first one it was cloudy so i used Hitech GND P-series to not get blown out sky, it was my first time to in Switzerland and Paris to use my GND, and i was learning, i am happy i didn't return back with all bad pics at least, i will never forget that moments there [my first time to travel alone in my life and to Europe itself].

Also, does anyone have any automotive-interior shots? How much of the interior does the lens cover, and does it look fisheyed?

Ok, so I'm not the only one who leaves it one. Well, I have to take it off to fit everything in my bag, and re-attach the 100-400L IS.

But, other than that, it's all I've taken pics with since yesterday afternoon.

Well, not my best, but here are some storm pics I took yesterday. Should have cropped out the distorted car (my woman's ride).

Pretty crazy afternoon. Sunny, beautiful morning, then I spend most of it inside, next I heard the sirens going off, went outside with my camera because I knew something was going on:

To achieve that effect you will need to go with either the sigma 8mm Fisheye or the peleng 8mm Fisheye. The sigma 10mm will give you the fisheye effect minus the black edges. I have both the 10-22 canon and the sigma 8mm FE.

By the way welcome to the forums:D

You need a fisheye lens to get a fisheye effect. The Canon EF-S 10-22 is not a fisheye lens.

I went back and forth on this for a long time.

I just picked up a home builder as a client. With my 40D and 17-40 mm lens, I could not go wide enough to take in his big, open architectural style. That meant that I needed a 10-22mm or a 5D.

I went ahead and decided to try the 10-22mm, and am impressed. Its a keeper. I was knocked out by the quality of the image, how easily it took distortion correction, and how well it worked with a CP. (all these images were shot with a CP)

Very nice! I love how this lens handles flare. I don't see any in those three pictures, and all were shot directly into multiple light sources! How did you setup the bathroom shot with the outside light coming in? It's always been a problem for me with those types of shots as the open window usually ends up washing out the picture.

I'm leaning towards making this my first lens purchase after I pick up the 40D + 28-135 kit in the next couple of weeks.
It's between the 10-22 & 17-40L, but I think the 10-22 is winning right now. If only it were on rebate!

Now, let's play "Where's Matt?"

Thanks for the props.

The shot in the bathroom was a bear. In order to balance the light, I placed a 580 EX II with an omni bounce on the floor right below the tripod. Camera right was the walk in closet. I put another 580 EXII in the closet, on a stand, and fired it into the closet door as a reflector. Both on full power. I then put a CP on the lens to knock down as much of the reflection as I could between the shower and the mirror (still missed some, though, didn't I?:)) I PS'd some of the specular highlights out.

For what its worth, Live View is addictive for this type of stuff. I was able to put the tripod in a position that I could have never used trying to frame from the VF.
