Here are a couple of my first shots with an EF-S 10-22 lens on a 350D. I like this lens but there is distortion at the widest end - 10mm which is where it was set for both of these. The second has been cropped top and bottom. C&C welcome.

Me too but I'm not gonna say it again as everyone probably is getting tired of it. Waiting on rebate checks to proceed with purchase ... hopefully.

Nice wide results by the way.

Only doing landscapes with it is a waste of a great lens...stick it on the camera and don't take it off for a few days, loads of fun this one is.

I hate the AF of my L's after using this lens, blinding fast the little guy is.

That's Perth isn't it Mike? (I've driven through it, but never got round to stopping and having a wander).

I'm curious with EF-S (apart from the kit lens) owners - are you not concerned about buying a lens that ties you to the APS-C sensor? What made you decide to get an EF-S lens rather than a standard EF lens that will work with your next body?

Yes it is Perth - my home town for the last 11 years. Definitely worth a longer visit next time - bring your camera!:)

I have wanted to move back to SLR cameras ever since moving to digital about 8 years ago but the cost put me off until this year. I set myself a budget limit and chose a package of body + lenses. After reading lots of reviews, and deciding what kind of photography I like, the 350D and the EF-S lenses just emerged on top. I suspect that when I retire in several years time I will buy a whole new package. I have no doubt that technology will have moved on and that I will want the latest of everything including lenses. The lenses may not become optically much better but I fully expect the AF and IS technology will be better. I have no fears about the 350D (and its lenses) not finding a home - there are lots of family members ready to snap up my cast-offs!

Re the Robin

Ho! Ho! Ho! I'm sure the things stuffed! It's legs look at a bit of a funny position. (No offence - definition is excellent) I have been thinking of this lens to keep in the bag. More weight for my wife to carry for me!

All the best

Wow, to those who do not have this lens, you really can't appreciate just how close he got to this bird. I would venture to say about 12" away.

I love my 10-22!

According to my calculations even at 22mm (full zoom in) the field of view is 12.3x8.2 inches at a distance of 12inches so (unless it is a crop) he was even closer!!!! (Must be a crop!).

C'mon Racketman - spill the beans! The robin and you did a deal, right? What was in it for him? Bet it was chickenfeed! LOL!

New York pumps out SO much light, these were ALL handheld, typically around 1/60 or 1/90.

Ok, I just have to know how you did this! I tried to get a closeup of a swan with my new 10-22 a week ago. I couldn't have been more than a foot away from it when I got this at 22mm with a 20D:

How severely did you have to crop your picture? Mine is uncropped.

By the way, I love this lens! It's already a favorite of mine, just as clear and sharp as any of my L's. Definitely one of my best recent purchases!

Hi,

I took the 10-22MM EF-S out for some spring flowers snaps this afternoon. Here is a sample: 1/200, f/11, 21MM, ISO=400.

I continue to use this lens as my "walk around" nothing else captures the magic of the outdoors like it :)

Yes my one is sharp in the centre and not too bad on the edge wide open - the very corners don't seem to sharpen up until about f11 but for most shots that is not important.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it - No tripod, I just leaned up against a wall and hoped for the best. I'm quite new to photography but my photoshop skills help me out

If had a graduated neutral density filter I suppose this would have been the best option. The sky was very bright and washed out. Being that the shot was taken in Raw format I was able to get the detail back from the bright sky and compose 2 images - one to expose the foreground and the other for the sky and washed out areas.

Cheers.

Karl and Blue: If the two image composite technique can expand the dynamic range of a photo is there an advantage to using the NDG filters? Thanks.

Hmm.... Not having used any NDG filters I wouldn’t know. I'm assuming from other posts that it’s best to get it right in the camera rather than play around in Photoshop. I feel that there is probably more control to be had using image manipulation because you can tweak it almost exactly how your minds eye would see it. If you know you are going to be taking pictures in extreme contrasting conditions then just switch to raw (if your not using it already) and take a quick snap. You can then move the exposures and a few other settings to create a few images to merge. I must say that I was surprised at how much information is still available in apparently blown highlights

Cheers. ;)

Mike Bell

I've used ND grads and they usually allow you to balance the exposures of the sky and land without resorting to exposure blending later. Interestingly the commonest one people use is the 0.6 which cuts the light by about 2 stops.

On the other hand - it seems to me that if you use RAW then the only parts of a pic that you simply cannot salvage are the parts so overblown they are white or so underexposed they are black.

Horses for courses. I'm trying to perfect both techniques. :)

Tsmith
10th of May 2006 (Wed), 18:31
Thanks Karl. Hopefully Blue or others who have used the ND Grads will check in.

Using the 0.6 NDG + shooting in RAW really seems to give you a wider dynamic range to me. One you can keep the sky detail captured by the NDG then bring out any foreground shadows simply by adjusting curves and levels.

I'm no post processing expert so this is the method that I've managed to get excellent results using verses the blending of multiple images.

Lester Wareham
11th of May 2006 (Thu), 04:37
I tend to find I can expose for the forground and still recover detail from the sky in the RAW conversion. So you can do two RAW conversions and you can then mat these in the PS as if they were two exposures bracketed.

No it is a crop only EF-S lens. The equivalent would be the 17-40 on a 5D.

The 10-22 is the only lens I would still recommend someone to get if they expect to upgrade at some point to full frame.

You mount the camera to the car with a rig of your choice, and then you push the car with the engine off in a parking lot or similar and the long exposure simulates the fast moving effect.
