there is a fair bit of noise of the ceiling of the hall.
is that normal with HDR's?
i dont do it myself so i dont know

I think you need to pick a subject where HDR will bring the shadows out more. I don't think this shot will really do it. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and that's exactly what you're trying to achieve here, dynamic range with your shadows. Try something particularly at night where shadows are hard to come by. The key thing here is to keep on trying.
