Greetings all.
Been a while since I made any contributions to this forum. Have done 7 weddings in the past 5 weekends and I'm worn out. All shot in RAW, processed, tweaked, twisted and fine-tuned to the nth degree. Here are 2 I thought you might like to see. Cheers.

Ummm, the selective colouring is odd.... A car and beer cans are really strange options to highlight in a wedding photo. Maybe a beer ad, but for a wedding? They'd probably look better in full colour or full BW in my opinion.

Have to agree with Lloyd. This type of shot might impress the groom, but I am guessing that the bride might not be as thrilled, but who knows.
IMO this is where selective color is too gimmicky. Were these by request of the B/G or were these ones you were playing around with on your own?

Alot of people don't understand the Australian sense-of-humour. I think the shots are great. They're obviously not intended to be the main photos in the wedding album. just shows the lighter side of an Aussie Wedding. Are the 2 cars on the left and right GTs? If so, i'm jealous.

This is a very good point. What is a good photo? I think that this is very much open to interpretation. I did a wedding this past weekend where the groom and the groomsmen have a history with the grooms Eclipse(modified tuner car)... so one of the group shots I took with them have them all "assuming the position" Hands on the car. To some, this would seem tacky... or gimicky, but to the bride and groom who understand the premise of the shot, it will be one for the album for sure.

And yes that would be cool... but would a shot like that need 'artistic touches' like using selective colour on the car? Would the selective colour make the shot any better, or add significance to the history of the car? Would it tell the story of the guys better? It doesn't really.

Any artistic touching (and I mean ANY) is something that should be done ONLY if it ADDS something of value to the photo. Does it add the correct mood? Does it reflect the subjects personality? Does it enhance the impression of the setting/composition? Even something as trivial as a black and white conversion should be thought out. I usually know right when I'm taking the picture whether or not it will be black and white or not. When I create a composition I see the completed, final shot in my mind.

All I'm saying is selectively coloured beer cans do not tell the viewer that the guys love beer. The viewer would know this even if it was in dull colours.

Hear hear! I think that are amusing!

Dad always said that in the small town where he taught, the churchs were too small for everyone, so all the women would go inside and the men would stand around outside and drink beer ;). From my understanding, the beer cans are perfectly selected

I see what Lloyd is saying and I guess it comes down to personal taste. I have a real thing for selective colour since it's new to me and a 'flavour of the month' so to me, I like them.

Sorry Steve, the first one just doesn't do it for me I'm affraid. As a straight B&W conversion I think it would look great, but the colours in the centre around the car and the B&G the way they are, I don't think looks quite right.

Now, the second shot I think is great. It conveys a "sense of humour". The "Lads" having a last drink together. The significance of the cans being selected hightlights the occasion. I also happen to think it would look great as a straight B&W conversion - but hey, it's fun to experiment.

Nice work ;-)

I like them! The selective color is well-done. IMO, the only opinion that matters is of those who are paying the bill.

B&W with color parts is so out.

If I see one more B&W bride with red roses i'll just die.

Both would be good photos if you got rid of the selective color.

Nope. Just the handcuffs. :)

MY GOD! Those are FUGLY!

Mullet ugly.

If the B&G wanted selective coloring, then they deserve what they get.

If you think they look good, well - just keep them out of your portfolio.

If you want to be "creative", try being creative - this same old, cheap, trite, overused, first-time-ever-using-photoshop-oh-look-at-me trick is the polar opposite of creativity.

I am stunned.

Ok, some hijacking going on? Hjghj, your picture is a bit off the topic. We're not here posting some PP pics, we're explaining why the public are allowed to photograph a B&G and why it's a bad idea to go into a city and expect to be the only one taking pictures.

We've also discovered that Pro's wouldn't make such a ghastly mistake or would use their vast knowledge and diplomacy to avoid a potential disaster.

I think that pretty well sums it up? LOL :)

LOL wrong thread csm!

I'm sorry that you're having such a bad life, Radtech.
Maybe you should try engineering instead.

As I said in the beginning, it's all about personal taste. Just like drinking that ferret p*ss XXXX. Who in their right mind would drink that stuff?? LOL I still like your pics :)

Hey Sarge. You obviously need to come back to Oz. And what you got against ferrets? One of my favourite animals. No wonder they banned them in Qld. No competition for the XXXX.

LOL. I'll take your word for it. I'll be back in December and hopefully to QLD (Canungra).

Setting aside for a moment the question of whether selective colorization is in or out. On my monitor, both images have a significant problem. The B&G look pasted into the image. Same for the beer can in the hand of the guy second from the left.

There may be times when the selective colorization works, but I don't think these photos are good candidates.

If you just have to do it, it sometimes helps to desaturate the colored portions just a bit.

Just my $.02

Thank you for your very constructive and intelligent C&C Scott. Perhaps Radtech might like to check your post for some lessons in manners.
PS - wanna buy a good monitor??? LOL

PS - wanna buy a good monitor LOLYou catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. As for the monitor, have one and I don't think the SO would like me to drop more $$ on more gear.

Okay, here we go. Bottom line on these 2 shot is this - they were ordered by the B&G. I don't normally do a lot of this sort of thing for weddings unless specifically asked. The beer can shot was the first thing the G asked for, having seen a similar thing in a wedding shop. These guys are hard workers and hard drinkers, and have been mates through school. Subsequently (and it's a big Aussie thing) beer is a big part of their lives. The other shot with the vehicles was done in a similar vein. They are all rev-heads and love their machinery, and the B&G and their car was to have prominence in this shot. So - where have I failed them? The goods have been delivered and they are stoked with the results. And for that matter, I'm pretty chuffed with them as well. My only problem (and it's personal) is their choices of beer and vehicles. All XXXX beer and all Big Boss V8 Fords. Oh well, we can't all be perfect! :)
