Here's some action from a local weekend junior basketball tournament. Light was difficult and varying with part dim lighting part fluctuating skylighting. All taken using the 70-200 f/2.8 at f/2.8 ISO 1600 and between 1/320 and 1/250. C&C Welcome.

must be pretty good lighting with an f/2.8 lens. Good shots, Love to see more shooting action though. Like to see the hands following through with the ball in the air to be exact. ;)

Thanks guys, the light was good at time as it was an afternoon tournament, if it was night I couldn't shoot in this stadium it'd be way too dark. I do agree with the action idea thanks Galaxy99, It was my return to basketball after a 4 or 5 month lay off due to it being off season so It took a while to get back, thanks again.

Couple of things...
1)very good for the most part, some are darker then others, thats my biggest CC, but generally very good I think...
2)I found in our HS gym that the light is worst as a rule BEFORE dark cuz the powers that be think that since its not dark out they dont need to turn on all the lights...once it is dark outside they crank up the light...so, in short, in the day time I HAVE to shoot at 1.8, once its dark outside and they have turned up the lights I can get up to 2.2 sometimes...LOL

Thanks superdiver, it is a tough gym, you'll be looking thru the lens and next thing the sun will go behind a cloud outdiese and you're underexposing without knowing! You always have to keep an eye on things. Sounds like an interesting appraoch your local gym has! Very hard to shoot in no doubt! Thanks for the kind words

What I do to avoid this, cuz as you KNOW, consistant light in a gym is a MYTH....LOL....I shoot in Av and not M just for this reason. I KNOW what f stop I want to use, and what ISO, and what exposure, so all I want is the camera to figure out the speed I need to get me the exposure and the CWB I want...

/I actually did start AV mode but it was giving me around 1/200 to 1/250 a lot when the meter in M mode showed good light at 1/320, i shoot most sports in AV mode too and it works well in slightly better lit gyms too as well as outdoors.

I might be reading your post wrong but are you saying that in AV mode with a given setting (f/2.8 for example) the metering gives you one shutter speed but when you dial the same aperture using M mode you get a different metering and it suggests a faster shutter speed?

Composition on these is very good, and I agree that some are underexposed. I've never had much luck with Av... the varying uniform colors from white to dark drives the exposure crazy. I shoot M and correct anything in processing. I think if you move to some faster prime glass you'll be all set. With your body, a 135 f/2 will give you some great defensive shots, and the 85 f/1.8 and one of the 50s will cover the close end. I actually shoot with an 85 1.8 on one body and a 200 1.8 on the other... shooting both at f/2. These are 1.3 crop cameras though. I think these are great shots... good work.

Pretty good for the set up you have. As mentioned earlier, a faster lens would help in those dark gyms and allow you to get more action and less free throws and dribbling. Really like the third shot.
