One of the best and the one I am using is http://www.fotki.com
They also have contest where you can win 1 year membership http://contests.fotki.com/contests/38 But you have to be a memeber. So to pay at least once 30$.
I have been in top 3 twice and now leading last contest. So it's 3 years of free membership.

This site is really quick and I think has a best interface. FTP/XP plugin/ActiveX and other ways of uploading.
You can get original account for free with 10Mb limit. For 30$ unlimited space. Plus you get much more as email/jurnal/Selling photo ...
I am not trying to sell it, I am just very happy with it.

I'd suggest that you take a look at Usefilm.com. It not only is a great place to upload your photos, but lots of really good photographers will give you comments and help you improve. I've really enjoyed being a part of that community. You can check out my holding at: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/22787.html

I second http://Usefilm.com for a critique of your photos. But you're limited to the rate at which you can upload photos.

Have a look at http://Fotopic.net. 250MB for free (500MB if you ask), and loads of controls to make the features of 'your' pages as you want. You can even switch off most of their branding.

http://ITatHome.co.uk redirects to my Fotopic site. They're going through some upgrades at the moment so you may find the site rather slow/or pictures unavailable for a day or so unfortunately, but I think it's a real gem myself...

Also, the Canon site for us Canon Europe users doesn't look too bad to me at http://www.cig.canon-europe.com/ (but I can't seem to get to it at the moment), and I suggest you check out http://www.andromeda.com/people/ddyer/photo/albums.html for starters...

Put up your own website on a free server, then upload "Gallery" software from http://gallery.sourceforge.net/

I have a gallery at fotopic myself, but wasn't aware of the possibilty to ask for another 250MB. How did you managed that? Just curious.

From the Fotopic registration page at http://fotopic.net/register/

"You get 250Mb of space free with your Fotopic.Net account. On most cameras, this will allow you around 1500 photographs online with most mid-range digital cameras such as the Nikon Coolpix 2000. You can request more quota for free when you have used your existing allocation."

I've not asked for more yet myself...

I have a gallery at fotopic.net for a while now and I find it highly configurable both in terms of look & feel and the features. And all this sounds even better given that this is for free!

I have just signed up to fotopic, but my images look so horrible once they have uploaded. I reduced them all to 250kb and 640x480 before uploading, and they look fine on my computer, but once they are uploaded they look dull and soft. Is there any way to keep the quality?

Its ok........I have managed to figure it out. If anyone care to know - you have to disable image resizing. This is done via the Image settings section.

Two obvious choices are missing from this thread, and I wonder if there's some reason I've missed.
Flickr.com - missing the elegancy of the photo sites but has a powerful social network
Picasa.com - missing the elegancy and the society but makes a great combo with the Picasa software (similar to iPhoto or Adobe PS Lightroom, but only for Win OS)

I use both www.flickr.com and www.pbase.com. Flickr's fun for the the photo groups and sharing, and family can direct order prints of holiday pics etc. right from the site. But visually, for more of just an online gallery, I like the look and function of pbase better (to me, visually it looks better and it's easier to navigate).

I have to throw in my vote for http://www.flickr.com as well. I've used photobucket and a couple of others, but to me Flickr is the best for linking photos onto forums. The others tend to have so much advertising and useless stuff loading that it takes a lot longer for the picture to load. To me, Imageshack is the worst. Half the time, I'm not willing to wait on the picture to load, and that's with me being on a very high speed connection at home and a T3 connection at work.

do any of these sites enable group uploading from separate sources, so the site's photos are available to an entire group to view and order from?

We just had a very large group of high school kids build houses in Mexico on spring break, and they want to upload to one common site so the whole group can see the photos and order the ones they want.

Any help appreciated...

I like imageshack. Flickr is too slow for me and always has been. Flickr does not like my slower DSL, but Imageshack is speedy on it.

I second the recommendation for smugmug.com. It has a very elegant layout and it's very easy to organize files and photos. It's not free, but one always pays for quality.

For sheer speed and ease of use...there is only one site that adds up...www.PBase.com is fast, easy and very reliable. There are some complainers about it...but virtually every one of them has done something wrong on their end to cause the problem...like linking to an upload tag and wondering why they get a red X....Stupidity on the part of the end user is not the fault of the service provider. Smugmug has nice options and is fairly easy to use...just takes way too long for the images to load sometimes.

I have to say that photobucket is my choice, can upload a bunch of files at a time even. they have quick links that you click on for inbeding an image to a board comment or links or html code for pasteing in what you need. it is nto the greatest but it is free ..

www.pic27.com (http://www.pic27.com) is a great website for uploading and sharing pictures. pic27.com is easy to use, with a simple but effective user interface. Registration is optional, but recommended, as it allows registered users to upload, transfer or deliver picture files indefinitely, all for free. There are no limitations on the size of your files. This also makes pic27.com (http://www.pic27.com/) ideal for trading or even selling pictures, e-Books or other digital files online.
