Thought Id post a photo of my lastest Lightning adventure last night. I used my 20D and 17-40 f4 L @17mm with my lightning trigger device. Settings were ISO 100, f11, and a 15 sec. exposure.

Thanks everyone. Im still keeping my homemade lightning trigger top secret til my article comes out in Shutterbug Magazine. I have two more in the process of being built and have a few people wanting to buy them. Its a fairly simple unit mainly composed of purchased items and making a couple connecting wires. Also its the only wireless lightning trigger. The sensor and transmitter can be placed anywhere within range of the receiver (to obtain higher and directional sensing).

Thanks eveyone. Im working on getting a photo of my lightning RIG tomorrow for those interested in seeing my camera / tripod setup. I run two cameras on one tripod with room for two more heads and cameras. As well as all the shutter cables and preview of the lightning trigger mounted but no build plans as of yet.

Was this last week during that monster storm we had? I was thinking of you and wondering if you would be out in the storm.

This one was taken on April 30th. I have some from that last storm too though.
Still unsure of a date on the article in Shutterbug... I think they are holding out so it will be just before first of the year with the sring storms.

Another great lightning shot from ya... I've only had one lightning storm this year and it ended up not being a very photogenic one at that. Glad that you've gotten a couple of opportunities.

Very nice shot as everyone else has said. I would like to say the left side bolts are quit a bit overexposed. I'm not a expert, just my take. My examples below, in my mind anyways, first is overexposed and the second would be very close to correct exposure. If I'm wrong please correct me, I'm new to photography but do have 1000's of lightning photos. I know there's noise in them(I use an old Canon g5) but just showing them for their exposure. Just an amateurs view.

Number 2 is of the Las Vegas Strip

thats awesome, I got caught in a lightning storm once, my girlfriend and I were driving along a beach road and the storm rolled in, so quickly I pulled out my camera, but it was raining so hard i couldnt get out my tripod, so i used my knee...needless to say it was rather interesting

Amazing shot! Living in Oklahoma, this is something I would be very interested in. Any plans for selling these setups?

Thanks for the kind words.

Camera Canon G5 P&S(with manual settings)

Focus - Infinity(always)

F/8 is the max on the G5, usually between 5.0 & 7.1 for lightning although I will go anywhere between 2.5 and 8 depending on how close the lightning is and how strong or bright it is.

Exposure is usually 3-4 seconds for city shots and up to a max(for the G5) 15 seconds out in the desert(no bulb). If you shoot 15 seconds with this camera then it processes for 15 seconds, same all the way down 3 and 3, 8 and 8 etc. Probably the biggest bummer for me as the best lightning "always" freaking happens when the camera is processing the last image:evil:.

ISO is always at 50 for me if you go higher there's just too much noise in this camera.

Tripod of course

Most important - HELL of a lot of gas money:cry: and major patience, can't tell you how many times I go out and get nothing. Storm dies, Can't get out of the rain band for the shot etc.

Hope this helps some. 1 of these days I'll get a real camera:)

Daytime is best on burst mode. It's not as exciting but is a challenge. The one with the rainbow was 2 days ago, damn storm was putting out some great lightning but this is all I got witht the rainbow.

Jeepers!

I took some lightning shots last year, but nowhere near that level. Since then I've been contemplating the lightning trigger, but don't do enough of that type of photography to justify it.

I like the shots, they're always good. I do have a question though. Why exactly are you using a lightning trigger at night and with a 15 sec exposure?? The only real use for a trigger is during daylight storms. I had been tempted to buy one for that purpose but it would only be for when I'm feeling lazy during a Saturday afternoon, or if I don't care to go through as many exposures. I'm not trying to be rude or anything along that line. Just can't understand why you would use one in this circumstance.

Thanks,

Rick
