I am going to buy a digital camera soon. I like the features and size of the SD1000. Is the A630 better than the SD1000? If so, is it enough the difference for the extra bulk? I usually take pictures on the beach and parties and resize to 2 or 3 mpx. to store or print in 4X6. Any advice for the purchase is greatly appreciated...

Sorry you haven't received a reply, I just purchased a 630 however.

i just bought the SD750 and like it a lot. It has a 3 inch screen and face recognition. I believe it's about $50 more than the SD1000.

I just bought the a640 (the model above the a630) two weeks ago this Friday. It's a very nice camera. I'm not familiar with the features of the SD1000, so I can't speak on it's capabilities. Either camera is capable of taking good shots that you can print at 4x6.

If all you going to do is print 4X6 5MP to 6MP is all you need. High MP will only inc noise at low light situations.

just received the SD1000 today. I also have the SD700 IS and am much more impressed by it. If the SD1000 had IS, I'd be much more impressed(I don't like using the flash.)

It also depends if you want a lithium ion battery (SD1000) or AA (A630). As well, the creative control of the camera is very limited with the SD. The A630 has manual features and covers a wider range of lighting situations. Size is another factor which you alluded to... I personally prefer the A series over the SD just because it gives me something to grip on to and is easier to hold. With the A630 you also have the swival screen LCD for better shooting at different angles.
The A630 uses Canons (now old) DIGIC II while the SD offers the new DIGIC III technologies. A630 also has 4x zoom where as SD only has 3x. Granted not a huge difference, but from far away trying to get close, the more even if only a little, the better.
Sorry I only have technical aspects but it gives something to start with.
Good Luck with your purchase :)

Going to the beach,
do the SD all you want is a point and shoot the size of a deck of cards. The A series are for more manual tweaking, size seems to be the issue with you.
