Hello all I am a complete noob to photography after spending a few months mulling over getting a Canon or Nikon DSLR. I have the Canon Rebel XTI and the Kit Lens 18-55mm and I am saving up for a Macro lens and the L series 70-200 lens.

I am blown away by the talent here and the creativity here which is pretty intimidating to a noob like myself.

I have lots of literature about photography so I am reading that and getting very comfy with my kit lens before I do plunge into anything else! My first question is how do you all get those borders around your pics? Also do I lose sharpness when I resize my pics?

Thanks,

Mike the Noob

The borders are done in a photo editing program, like Photoshop - or any number of other similar programs. Without knowing what program you are using, it is impossible to tell you step by step "how". Rest assured, however, it is fairly easy.

As far as sharpness loss when resizing, the correct answer is "Maybe". Not much help, I know, but I don't know if you are talking about sizing up or down - and by how much. Either direction has it's issues. Down-sizing loses detail, so "less sharpness" with less detail, and Up-sizing magnifies blur that you might not notice as well as having to "guess" where to add pixels that were not there to begin with. But there are things you can do to minimize the problems - again, specifics to your question would help.

I know that those are murky answers, but I hope it helps.

Welcome to POTN!

IT does help and thank you! This is going to be my second hobby and I thought Guitar was alot to get my brain around but this takes the cake. I never realized just how much went into this and how fun it could be!

Thanks!
