looks gruesome. Kind of a small whale... what species?

From the looks of it, I'd say the top of the cliff was a wise distance. Hopefully also upwind . . .

Hard to get a sense of scale... is that square thing in the lower right a TV screen frame?

I'm wondering how a bunch of rocks managed to end up on top...I suppose people threw them, pigs.

I hear the best way to get rid of them is to blow them up with dynamite...

It is suggested that some whales commit suicide in some circumstances. Usually that happens in groups, though. Gross pic, but very interesting.

sorry for taking so long to get back, i still haven,t identified the whale, it was roughly 15-18 feet long, from where i first spotted it i thought the stones in its mouth were teeth and that it was a killer whale, when i got down to ground level i then saw it was stones in its mouth and on its body(school holidays)

It's a baleen whale..
So it's either an infant or a small Minke..

I think it's an infant though,.

If an Infant it would be hard to ID .. anything from Right to Fin,.
I can't even discern if it's a Rorqual from these images/it's current state.

It's not a Humpback is about all I would offer based on the few details I can pin point..

Unfortunately, this happens a lot! :( There are several reports of known cases, but who knows how many of these poor animals are killed and unreported or just unnoticed? It's sad to see such beautiful animals die under such horrible conditions. :(

Two years ago today as a matter of fact I was on a whale watch where we found a young Humpback Whale who was entangled in fishing gear. He/she was basically hogtied and could only swim in circles. It couldn't lift it's tail out of the water which is how Humpback Whales get their momentum to dive so needless to say it wasn't able to feed either. It was heartbreaking to see it, but luckily a whale rescue team was able to disentangle it later that afternoon.

If you're interested in seeing the photos I took of this whale, you can see them here... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=233541&highlight=humpback+whale

just checked your links zipline ,very impressive, i particulary like the pic of the whale swimming under the boat, i live in dundee scotland and we dont get many whale sightings here, we recently got a family of dolphins on the river tay and it has been a major economy booster, there are a couple of boats taking in the dolphin spotting but trying to get a place is very hard, i work with the public myself and see familys standing for some time just to get a small glimpse from the shoreline, a few jetskiers are complaining that they have been threatend by the general public near the ramps at the shoreline, the bottom line is people are in awe at these seldom seen creatures ,you can take a kid who spends most of his time playing computer games and his jaw will drop at the sight of a diving whale, i took a group of kids to see some seals in a sealife centre and they were totally mesmerised, they knew of them and seen pics of them but seeing them made a big difference, the problem is getting people away from their tvs and actually looking for themselves,
ps the pics taken by the last poster were in march the pics i took were this month (may) ill go back next week to see the condition of the whale, once a skeleton i am looking for a few bones if there are any left

Do not get me wrong i respect vegitarians but:

Plants are also living things and being killed in masses. You know what happens in the amazone area and indonesia.

Most vegitarians i know eat fish btw.

I don't agree with habitat destruction either.

I never understood why people don't consider anything living in the water to be an animal... it boggles my mind. I don't know any vegetarians that eat fish, but I have heard of it.
