From the people who subscribe to EOS magazine, do you think it is worth the money and is suitable for a new DSLR user like myself, or would I be better off getting magazine's like Digital Photo or Practical Photographer?

Any input appreciated.

It is a decent magazine covering a wide range of photographer's skill levels. Digital Photo Pro is also a good magazine and if I had to choose between the two it would be the latter.

That's a relatively vague question in that you haven't given any information other than you are a new DSLR user. What do you shoot with, what do you like to shoot, etc.

I subscribe to both magazines and find them both informative.

Sorry for the vagueness, I've recently purchased a 400D and currently only have the kit lens, and I am mainly taking pics of my two kids (one is three and the other 1 and a half) so trying to keep them in the frame is fairly hard.

So I was hoping to get info from magazines for techniques and maybe some tips on a decent lens as well.

I'd recommend EOS Magazine certainly - I've ben a subscriber since the start and learned a lot from it. Take a look at Photography Monthly too.

I think you've found one of the best resources for getting up to speed on techniques and equipment right here: POTN.

I've been in the same mode for about 6 months and I've collected a large array of information on equipment (especially lenses) that apply to my kind of shooting. The materials I found most useful are all either directly from posts, links to older threads on basics, links to product reviews, suggested books, and as result of direct questions (i.e., posts). There is a lot of data to mine on this site and there are some fantastically talented people who seem to like helping out the new folks.

But that's just me.

I've just received my EOS magazine 'taster' in the post after recently buying a 500D. I was wondering the same thing - is the subscription worth it? It's £21.95 for a year but the magazine is only published quarterly. How many pages does it usually have? I've already bought some really good DSLR photography magbooks that have tons of info & cost £7.99 each. So the main selling point of EOS magazine for me would be it's focus on the camera type that I have.

Hmmm, for a beginner I'd probably recommend PhotoPlus. Like EOS Magazine it's Canon-specific but its articles are more of a how-to guide. EOS Magazine is great for more in-depth articles.

Some of the best photography related magazines are trade publications such as Rangefinder, these like subscription based publications are advertising supported but are sent free to qualified subscribers.

Now the term “qualified subscriber” means one is in the business of photography the definition of I will leave of up to your imagination.
