Last night around 11:30 pm when I was getting home from work, I went to my trunk to get my camera backpack, slung it over one shoulder and heard the WORSE SOUND a photographer could and would ever want to hear!
CRACK, SMASH! Damn damn damn! The sound of my 30D with the
24-105 f4 L and my Peleng 8mm smashing to the ground!
Stupid me forgot I shot a couple of quick shots earlier in the evening and just laid the camera in the bag and didn't zip it!

Well the Peleng has a scratch on the glass!
the 30D has a nasty little gash on the back left hand corner.
It works just fine though WHEW!
The 24-105 got lucky REAL LUCKY!!
The protective lens saved it along with the lens cap.
But when I first picked it up all I heard was glass rattling around
I cussed so loud I think I woke up my neighbors!!!
But found out 3 hrs later (I was scared to look) the protective lens glass broke when the lens cap busted it in the fall, had to get a screw driver to pop the cap out.
LUCKY ME Thank God!

Question, since the original protective lens cover can't be removed, can I just screw another over it?

Bummer. You should remove the broken filter ring. Good luck

Try a filter wrench.

This is the umpteenth post I've read about backpacks and people dropping and breaking their equipment because some portion of the backpack was unzipped or open. Of course, it can happen with any bag, but it seems like backpacks are the worst offenders.

A filter wrench should be able to remove the filter ring. You probably don't want to put another filter on the old ring because the threads might be damaged and the new filter ring will get stuck. Also, the two rings together might cause vignetting at wider angles (though probably not on crop camera).
