ive thought about doing the same aswell. i would reccomend just keeping an eye out for a cheap D30 or D60, or even 10D (or rebel series if you can stand them). if i ever see one for the right price ill probably IR convert it aswell. :D

good luck with that. let me know if you find 2 ;)

well, my number 1 choice is the d60 but i don't mind a d30 as well. i prefer not to go with the rebel due to the plastic or the 10d due to the price. i will try to find one for you as well ;)

pretty much summed up my views aswell.

so are you gonna pay $350 to have it done, or buy just the filter and test your skills with a desoldering gun and fine electronics :p. (im for option B myself)

let me just put it this way: last time i decided to solder something, i managed to leave a 10inch hold in my table. now, which option do you think i should go with? :)

What's your price range? I saw a couple of DSLRs listed on Craig's List in my area (Portland) under the photo/video classification, but I thought their asking price as a bit high.

as cheap as i can get it (this is why i am asking for beat up bodies). i need something decent but i don't want to spend too much money unless i am 100% sure that IR is something that i will use a lot.

I want to do the same thing too, only I'm willing to take it apart and convert it myself.

I may try IR with film... That would be cool...

Definately worth it if you can do it especially now that we are getting some leaves on the trees. It does make you look at things very differently :) and is very addictive.

I'm not sure that a beat up body would be the best way to go, especially with the chutter count associated with those came, also a beat up body means beat up guts.

You're going to find that quite different from digital IR, I suspect. I've worked with both B&W and CIR on film and I've not yet seen digital IR that looked anything like the film results. One of these days I'm going to get around to having the D60 converted (clear, not IR, filter so I can play with false color IR as well) and see if I can match it.

The other things to bear in mind are that a number of the EOS film bodies use an IR LED to watch film advance (rather than the gear mechanism of time immemorial), this can fog the film; and B&W IR film's also likely to get fogged if you expose even the cannister to light - the "light traps" on film cannisters aren't really tight to IR wavelengths - so get a changing bag for loading the camera.

Right - I have been told about the IR LED film advance - so I would get a really old SLR that still had that little lever for advancing the film.

when i say beat up, i mean a body that is less than perfect cosmetically. maybe a camera that was used by a pro that still works perfectly but looks like hell.

That will also increase your chances of finding a lens with the IR focussing indicator mark on it!

Would one of you mind posting a link to where I could read about the hardware IR conversion? I didn't know that the sensors were that sensitive to IR wavelengths.
