Very nice shot there GR, I love the rich colours, nice DOF, it's almost coming out of the screen. But I agree with Lawrie, a little more light. :)

That's a very good point to raise, it would be interesting to hear others views on this actually. It's something I question on a daily basis. But I guess, a little touch of tweaking does no harm at all. :)

Photoshop is not the be all and end all, most if not all it does can be done with other simpler, cheaper (or free) programs.
Some people even to use pictures straight out of the camera :)

I usually use Photoshop for sharpening if needed. I have done some artistic rendering due to poor focusing (ie got to darn close).

However, with that said, the New Adobe Lightroom is really bring out some more color than my shots originally. It was made for photographers specially and seems easier to use.

Digital slrs are not designed to produce photos which are 'finished' without any editing. Most shoot in RAW and adjust WB, sharpening, levels etc in Photoshop as Canon require you to do. It is not cheating any more than masking etc in a darkroom is cheating. Obviously if you are combining images or using special filter effects then you should state this and be judged accordingly on your photoshop skills.

Very nice shot - good rich colours and crisp detail.
Re- photoshop Isee photography as a two stage process, firstly capturing the scene in front of you to the best of your ability and secondly to artistically improve the final image through pp.
I've had similar disussions with artist friends and pointed out that the only difference is that they do their pp during the capture stage. eg. painting a blue sky on an overcast day or ignoring a telegraph pole which is spoiling the view.

That's always a point of debate.
I always shoots raw, hence I always apply some sharpening and perhaps adjust the levels/curves and highlights/shadows. I will also adjust White Balance if needed. (Usually the case when I shoot inside the house under incadecent lighting) Same thing with exposure. I don't have the ability to "nail it" everytime, not even close!
I'm pretty confident that it's not cheating since you could actually do all these things in-camera to generate jpeg. (Adjust sharpness, White Balance, exposure, etc...)
So you have to understand that when you generate a jpeg from the camera, it's a "processed" image. With RAW files, there is no processing, and it's up to you to do what the camera would normally do for jpeg images.
Now, anything beyond that, like coloring in a richer looking sky, cloning, getting rid of things that are in the way in terms of composition, that really all hovers the fine line between photography and art.
Is it cheating to clone something out of a frame? Maybe. It depends on the purpose of photography for the individual.
For me, the "art" side of it appeals to me. I'd like to get to a point where I can capture something with my own unique perspective. I'm not there yet.
