View Full Version : I want to protect my S1IS lenses

The thing about the camera is that the lens cover comes off easy.
It doesn't lock or anything, and sometimes it will fall off. I've only been using it for a month and got fingerprints on the lenses twice already.
Can I attach a cover? a piece of glass? a filter? or do they make a different cap maybe?
Thanks

I am not too familiar with the S1, but if the lens has filter rings, put a UV filter on it and stick a normal cheap lens cap with a tether to that. That will solve your problem. You may have to put an adapter to get the filter rings on your lens, though.
Those of us with Powershot G series camera typically go to this site to buy stuff:

You see - the sucky thing is that the camera wasn't designed to accept filters.
Even if I buy a lens adapter which is 52 mm diameter, it doesn't have any grooves to put the filter on
Anybody else know anything?

Doc, I've had my S1 for about 2 weeks now. I too have been wondering how to deal with protecting the front lens. I have always attached an UV lens to the front of all my cameras and it is frustrating to not be able to do this on my S1. Would one possibility be to attach the conversion lens adapter LA-DC52E and find a UV lens that will screw into the front of it? Only problem is you would always have this hanging off the front of the camera. Kind of bulks up the camera. Almost seems that Canon or the aftermarket needs to come up with an UV lens that attaches onto the front of the S1 lens using the Canon snap ring attachment points. Maybe we need to email Canon and the aftermarket on this? Charles

That's the normal way to add a filter or conversion lens to any compact digital camera.

That's the disadvantage... also discovered by millions of G1 to G5 users...
But then, if you didn't want a bulky camera, wh'd you buy the S1

But that solution would be as flimsy as the lens cover obviously is. Better use a regular adapter, especially if you might think about also using conversion lenses. Then a tight fit would be very important.
Best regards,

I've called up canon and asked about it. The response was that the camera was not designed to work with filters AT ALL :?
Then I went to Henrys with the camera and tried on the lens adapter. It fits nicely and gives this "cool look" :D
It's 52mm and the sales guy said that it will accept 52 mm filters. I asked if he's had anyone attach the filters, he said no.
When I told him about my converstation with canon support he told me it's a bad idea.
I asked him to try on the setup - he refused. oh well

Doc, I wouldn't believe everything that you hear from Canon's reps on the phone. The lens adapter IS designed to take filters. I have a B+W
UV filter on the end of my lens adapter and I can tell you that it works perfectly. This is my first post and I don't want to come across like a know it all or anything like that, but listen to the answers from people who actually own the camera. They will be your best source of knowledge. I actually bought two lens adapters. One is used for the UV filter and the other one is used to keep the Canon telephoto lens permanently mounted so that I can take it on and off easily. I am using the extra lens hood on my G2. I have the LensMate 49mm adapter on the G2 and I got a 49-52mm step up ring so that I could use the extra lens hood on the G2. It works perfectly. Although this is my first post, I have been reading these forums for a long time, and I finally decided to chime in. And yes, I'm over 13. :P

I am using the adaptor with either a UV or circular polarizer filter. I keep the UV on unless I need the polarizer. Gives some lens protection and doesn't look too bad. I was already used to this type setup from my Oly 3040.

Update:
I bought the tele adapted and a linear polarizer. Got it on. Seemed really cool. The focus worked btw with no problems.
Tele extender is a cheap plastic POS. I think it was designed from the beginning to fall apart in a week or so.
Returned both of them today. I'm planning to sell the S1 and get a rebel/10d. No use buying a "wide converter" for the price of a wide angle lens.

Look here: http://www.lensmateonline.com/S1.html
You should be able to thread a UV filter on that.
